Welcome to the 60s!! A decade where I wasn’t even a thought in no one’s mind. The year of sex, drugs, rock and roll and so many other things. The 60s popped off with many films like Psycho, getting it on in an apartment, having religious talk and so much other. Get ready for a ride of a decade.
Psycho
One of the best and iconic works of legendary film maker Alfred Hitchcock, Psycho changed the game in the horror genre. It is often ranked as one of the greatest films ever made as it set a new standard in violence, psychology of a killer and sexuality. Norman Bates and his “mother” have become iconic in the film world and rank as the original slasher.
Spartacus
I’m Spartacus!! Spartacus was a Thracian gladiator who escaped slavery and was one of the major leaders in the Third Servile War. Spartacus is a phenomenal film. Told from two different views: Spartacus’s rise and quest for freedom and the Roman Senate’s quest to stop him. The film excels in cinematography. I swear that these epic films know how to show everything in grand ways. The cast was the strongest part of the film. I was surprised Kirk Douglas didn’t win the Academy Award.
The Magnificent Seven
The original Magnificent Seven is a classic. This film has a cast that was legendary back in the day. It had Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, Robert Vaughn, Brad Dexter, James Coburn, and Horst Buchholz. These individuals banded as a group to protect a small village. You know who the villain was? Mr. Eli Wallach aka the Ugly from the Good, the Bad and the Ugly. A great western film.
Elmer Gantry
Elmer Gantry is one of those films that surprises you. One where you shouldn’t judge a movie by its cover. The plot is simple with a fast-talking, charming, colossal-ass smile, pearly white teeth salesman named Elmer Gantry. He takes it upon himself to spread the word of God. Burt Lancaster carried this film with his performance.
Ocean’s 11
Before George Clooney and the crew robbed a Las Vegas casino, the Rat Pack did it first. Starring an ensemble cast and five members of the Rat Pack: Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Lawford, and Joey Bishop. The Rat Pack had a sense of cool in this funny and entertaining heist film. One should watch the classic before jumping into the remake.
The Apartment
The Apartment is where it’s at. It is a fun-loving movie where you want the little guy to win and for the girl to truly see him as a love interest. A film where a worker gives up his apartment for his upper management to go cheat with their mistresses. Lemmon is great in his role as a man who wants to move up, fall in love and in a weird way.
Swiss Family Robinson
We have to include the OG Disney film on this list. A film about a family that is shipwrecked on a deserted tropical island. The family is forced to remain on the island because they ship is damaged. If you have been to Disneyland, you know about the wonderful play area. It is always fun to watch a family turn a crazy situation into a lushes environment.
Cinderfella
A male version of the Cinderella tale, this film is pretty funny and enjoyable to watch. Maybe not one of the best films in 1960, this is my list and I am putting it in. Jerry Lewis is funny as Fella who tries to get from under his wicked stepmother. You will laugh and sing with many of the songs even if the film is an exact version of Cinderella.
Two Women
Two Women is more about one woman and her quest to protect her daughter. Sophia Loren is an undeniable beauty and is the one that carries this film. The story is meh in the beginning but the second half of the film is where everything goes down. Two Women is one of those films that wont leave a strong impression on you later on but is still a great watch.
Village of the Damned
The film that introduced the world to creepy ass kids with platinum blonde hair and a stare that will make your mind explode. A film where a village becomes unconscious for several hours and then all the child-bearing women become pregnant and have a baby all on the same day. This film shows why kids might be a little bit more spooky than you want.
