Way before I was born, 1964 had some classic films that are still beloved today. If you love comedy, then it had Dr. Strangelove (Instant Classic) and Zorba the Greek. It has the third and best James Bond film ever with Goldfinger and Clint Eastwood brought the western genre to a new realm. It also introduced the world to Mary Poppins Y’all. 1964 was a great year in film.
Dr. Strangelove
Dr. Strangelove is an ICONIC film and one of the funniest films around. A comedy film that satirizes the Cold War fears of a nuclear conflict between the Soviet Union and the United States. George C. Scott is freakin hilarious and has one of the best scenes. Peter Sellers will straight up have you rolling on the ground in laughter as Dr. Strangelove. You have to watch this film because it is the best.
Mary Poppins
There is no name or character more synonymous with Disney than Mary Poppins. The character is a cultural icon in the world of film. Julie Andrews is phenomenal as the sassy, charming, magical, and life-changing nanny. If you are looking for a reason why this movie and character is so great, it’s because her name and style have lived on through the ages. Look no further than Guardian of the Galaxy. Vol 2 when Yondu saves Star Lord and yells, “I’m Mary Poppins Y’all!”
Goldfinger
Sean Connery is by far the best James Bond and the original. Goldfinger sent the James Bond franchise into another level. The story, villain, girl painted in gold and the technology was great and the starting point of how all the Bond films are made together. I think this is the first time James Bond said his famous line, “A Martini. Shaken, not stirred.”
My Fair Lady
My Fair Lady is an instant classic. Starring Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison the plot revolves around a poor Cockney flower-seller who overhears an arrogant phonetics professor, who claims he can teach anyone and her proper “English.” Craziness ensues as both characters are at each other’s throats and a sudden transformation. One of the best musicals around.
A Fistful of Dollars
This film is the start of the Dollars Trilogy or the Man with No Name Trilogy. The film initiated the popularity of the Spaghetti Western genre. Starring the great and legendary Clint Eastwood, as a nameless gunman who arrives at the Mexican border town and starts some major stuff between many different people. The iconic scene has been played over many times.
Topkapi
I love me a good heist film. I’m talking about a heist film that is not too straightforward but has a few twists in the end that will make you think. Topkapi is an excellent example of an outstanding heist film. What else could you want than watching a film about a group of individuals stealing a priceless relic. The twists and turns are always fun to watch.
The Killers
A second remake of the inspired work by Ernest Hemingway. It is a story told from the hitmen’s point of view. The killers try to find out why their latest victim, just got shot. The film stars Lee Marvin and it also has the future president, Ronald Reagan. The film is pretty good and one of my favorites for this year.
Zorba the Greek
Anthony Quinn stars as Zorba, an earthy and boisterous Cretan peasant. This film is hilarious and fun to watch. Quinn was the best part of the whole film and should be applauded for her performance. What more could you want in a film that an English traveler meeting Alexis Zorba and having his life changed forever.
The Pink Panther
You know the classic theme song to the famous pink panther. The first installment in the franchise, the story follows Jacques Clouseau as he travels to many different places trying to track down a notorious jewel thief known as “The Phantom” before stealing the precious Pink Panther. This film is full of laughs and is one of the best films of the year.
