1972 was the year when one of the greatest films ever dropped. A film where a man made an offer you couldn’t refuse. Also, it made you think about going on a cruise ship, having a banjo competition with a little kid before crazy shit happening in the woods, singing in a lounge in Germany and having some crazy times with Apes. Oh, 1972, you will live on in history.

The Godfather

Via: Paramount Pictures

The Godfather is a film that will never get old. It is one of the best films ever made and one of the best gangster movies. It’s a movie that has been ranked as one of the greatest movies ever made in terms of story, dialogue, music and characters. Who can forget the horse’s head in the bed or the iconic, “I’m going to make him an offer he can’t refuse.” A film that has a great cast from Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, Richard Castellano, and Robert Duvall to name a few. Sit back and give honor and respect to the Godfather.

The Poseidon Adventure

Via: 20th Century Fox

This is the film that made me never want to go on a cruise ship. The story centers on the SS Poseidon, a soon to be decommissioned luxury liner on her final voyage. On freakin New Years, the boat is overturned by a tsunami. Passengers must try to make it to the top. It is a fun and crazy movie. With Gene Hackman leading the charge.

Dr. Phibes Rises Again

Via: Anglo-EMI Film

You damn right I am putting this film on my list. A film that I used to watch with my dad. It is the sequel to the Abominable Dr. Phibes with the famous doctor seeking eternal life in Egypt while pursuing a centuries old man who holds the secrets to what Phibes is looking for. Is this film as great as the first one? Nope, but it is still entertaining. This was Saw before Saw. It has freakin Vincent Price. That is enough for me.

Deliverance

Via: Warner Bros.

Deliverance is one of those films that are not for the faint of heart. Starring Jon Voight, Burt Reynolds, Ned Beatty, and Ronny Cox, Deliverance is a film where a camping trip goes terribly wrong. The dueling banjo scene is fun to watch but after that, shit goes down for the four men. The rape scene is hard to watch but that is with any film. This film makes you not want to go canoeing down any river in the south.

Cabaret

Via: Allied Artists

Cabaret isn’t your standard musical where it’s song after song. The film has a nice story about two people with some musical acts sprinkled in. One doesn’t get caught up in the musical numbers nor are they out of place. Minnelli is wonderful in her role as Sally Bowles, the fun loving, want to be a star character.

Blacula

Via: American International Pictures

It might not be the best vampire film in the world but Blacula is on the list. Starring William Marshall as Blacula, an 18th-century African prince named Mamuwalde, who is turned into a vampire by Count Dracula. Dracula was a punk for not helping suppress the slave trade but that is for another story. Like my people, we needed a black version of a tale and it should be watched.

What’s Up, Doc?

Via: Warner Bros

What better way than to have a movie title after the famous Bugs Bunny line. What’s Up, Doc is a hilarious screwball comedy that revolves around the accidental mix-up of four identical plaid bags. The confusion leads to some crazy situations for all parties involved. You get a chance to see Barbra Streisand and Madeline Kahn. What more do you want than those two.

Solaris

Via: Mosfilms

We have to go with the original one on this list. The film centers on a space station that is chilling in the orbit of the planet Solaris. Things get weird when three scientists have mental breakdowns and Kris Kelvin goes to check it out but soon develops the same thing. This film is great but if you can stay on to the end, it is worth it. It does have great themes and once things start going, you will be completely invested. See the power of what the mind can do when in space.

Conquest of the Planet of the Apes

Via: 20th Century Fox

I am going to have to put this film on the list. I have watched all the Planet of the Apes films. This one was far better than the previous entries in the film series. Set in a world that has embraced ape slavery, Caesar rises up and prepares for battle against humanity. There is some symbolism in this film with cruelty but it is a fun watch. Have to give it up to the originals before watching the new ones.

Super Fly

Via: Warner Bros

I had to put this GREAT blaxploitation film in my top 10. Starring Ron O’Neal as a cocaine dealer trying to quit the game, the film is phenomenal. One of the best blaxploitation films ever made. How about that amazing soundtrack? I know this film is before my time but I have to thank my uncle for introducing my brother and I to the world of blaxploitation. Nothing but coolness all around.
