I want to say that 1982 was a great year in film history. It was poppin off and there were a lot of great films that became iconic. You had an alien that wanted to go home, getting trapped in a game, trying to catch cyborg criminals, becoming a gentleman and watching a barbarian become a lord. 1982 was one of the best years and here are my top 10 films for the year.
E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial
Coming from the great and legendary mind of Steven Spielberg, E.T. is one of the best movies ever made. The story is about a boy named Elliott who becomes friends with the nicest alien you ever met. They name him E.T. and all he wants to do is get home as he was left behind. You all know I love Steven Spielberg, and this was one of his masterpieces. The bike scene will forever live on in film history.
Blade Runner
Blade Runner is one of the best science fiction films. A movie that was before its time but can and needs to be appreciated today. The story is excellent, the visual effects are out of this world, and the acting is outstanding with some of the actors. Maybe not all the actors but some hold their weight beyond. The “Tears in rain” monologue by Roy Batty is one of the best monologues in movie history.
Poltergeist
Poltergeist is a supernatural horror film directed by Tobe Hooper and written by Steven Spielberg, Michael Grais, and Mark Victor from a story by Spielberg. The film focuses on a suburban family whose home is invaded by malevolent ghosts that abduct their daughter. The film is a classic semi-horror film but the little and the TV screen along with the spirts is no joke.
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
To me, the Wrath of Khan is one of the best Star Trek movies around. The film is a sequel and one of the best sequels around. The film is actually a sequel to the Star Trek TV episode “Space Seed” that was shown in 1967. In the film Admiral James T. Kirk and his crew face off against the tyrant Khan Noonien Singh (Ricardo Montalbán). We get the ICONIC scene of Kirk yelling into his communicator: “KHAN!!!!!!”
Tron
I have to put Tron on the list. A film that stars Jeff Bridges as Kevin Flynn. Have you ever thought what would happen if you got transported into a computer mainframe? Tron is that movie where Kevin, a computer programmer and video game developer is transported and interacts with programs. Think of the Matrix before the Matrix. This film was one of the first to use extensive CGI and it had an impact. The bike scene was amazing and how about the disk throwing game. One of the best films of the year.
The Thing
Yoooooooooo!! The Thing by the legendary John Carpenter is one of the best and most intense horror films. A story of a group of American scientists in cold-ass Antarctica who encounter an alien life-form that can imitate any organism. The film is wild as you don’t know who the Thing could be. The special effects is out of this world with the dog or doctor scene. The blood scene is equally crazy. One of the best horror films that is getting its due now.
48 Hrs.
A buddy cop film starring the unlike pair of Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy in as a cop and convict who team up to catch two deadly criminals. Inspector Jack Cates is given 48 hours to catch the criminals, but he needs help and decides to get Reggie Hammond out of jail to help. The film is hilarious but most importantly this is about Eddie Murphy. The film was Murphy’s first and launched his epic career.
The Secret of NIMH
I read the book during the summer when I was younger. I actually read the entire series. The movie is phenomenal! I have to watch it almost every few years because the plot is mature but the animation is outstanding. A story about a mouse named Mrs. Brisby who needs to move her house and get medicine for one of her young children. This film is amazing!
Conan the Barbarian
“Conan! What is best in life? To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women.” Conan the Barbarian is one of those films that I watch every time that it comes one. It is full of action and sorcery, and you also get to see Arnold Schwarzenegger looking jacked as hell and James Earl Jones with the straightest hair. I remember watching this film a lot as a kid with the big as snake, man turning into a snake and the epic quote
Rocky III
I’m not sorry for this because this is my list and I think Rocky III is awesome. Rocky must defend his title against Clubber Lang, played by the great Mr. T. Clubber Lang was the real deal as he was going to deliver pain! When you need to turn to Apollo Creed for help, you have a story. Plus, you get to hear the song, “Eye of the Tiger!”
