Welcome to 1991! Looking back on this year, I must say that this was a pretty good year in film. James Cameron decided to release a sequel to the Terminator, and it was off the freakin chain. Disney dropped an animated film that was the first animated film to be nominated for the Best Picture award. Anthony Hopkins scared the shit out of people and two women drove their car off a cliff. Let’s ride with some of the best films in 1991. Once again, these are my top 10 movies.
Terminator 2: Judgment Day

Yooooo! This was one of the best movies of the year. James Cameron came in hard with one of the best sequels. Arnold Schwarzenegger returns with Linda Hamilton as Skynet sends a new Terminator to kill John Connor. The film was great with an amazing story, intense action and fantastic quotes. Need to give Cameron his due with telling another awesome story of the killer cyborg. The special effects still hold up to this day. Watch this film and say, “Hasta la vista, baby.”
Beauty and the Beast

The film that put Disney animation back on the map and showed that they still had it or was it the movie that set a new era in Disney. The story of my gurl, Belle, and her relationship with the Beast, who was magically transformed for being a dick. The story is great with breaking a curse but also it features one of the most egotistical villains ever, Mr. Gaston. The music is great and fun to sing along with. What about the ballroom dance scene? ICONIC!!! This film made history with being the first animated film to be nominated for the Best Picture award at the Academy Awards. That is big time!
The Silence of the Lambs

There are some movies that are good, and then there are some that will creep you the f**k out. The film is terrific, but Hopkins honestly scared me. Just thinking about it sends a shiver down my spine. I don’t think I’m going to sleep good tonight. Damn you, Anthony Hopkins. Silence of the Lambs is AWESOME with Clarice trying to find a killer. Big up to Jodie Foster. Hopkins steals the show with his censor taker quote and just his aura. This movie is insane in a good way and it will creep you out. Have fun watching it.
Boyz n the Hood

Boyz n the Hood is one of the most iconic and legendary black films in America and the film industry. A film that explores what it was and maybe still like growing up in South Central Los Angeles. The impact of this film has been legendary with launching many film careers and having stars such as Ice Cube, Queen Mother Angela Bassett, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Laurence Fishburne. The storytelling of what life was like in South Central through rap lyrics, and showing the difference in living in black America versus white America. The film is intense and shows that gang life isn’t all that cracked up to be. Hell, this movie for years still has me scared of living in South Central Los Angeles.
The Addams Family

I don’t care what anyone says, The Addams Family was a great film back in the day and still is. This film was a reintroduction of the Addams Family after many years away from the TV show that appeared in 1964. On the amazing performances of Anjelica Huston, the late Raul Julia Christopher Lloyd and Christina Ricci, the film brought it and more. The film is hilarious as the family tries to reconnect with Gomez’s long-lost brother Fester. This was one of the best films of 1991.
Thelma & Louise

Thelma & Lousie has to be on the list of best films in 1991. Starring both Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis as Louise and Thelma, both were nominated for an Academy Award. This film shows feminism and being a strong woman. Thelma and Louise are two friends who are tired of their lives. Thelma is a bullied housewife, and Louise is a tired waitress. They decided to leave and go on a road trip. The trip turns bad when a murder charge comes up and they decide to flee to Mexico. The speeding off the cliff scene will be an all-time iconic scene. Oh, if you are looking for Brad Pitt’s first major role, here you go.
City Slickers

As I get older and sit at a job that is meh to me, I ponder all the things I want to do. City Slickers is one of those slapstick comedies that has aged pretty well and that you might enjoy. It has a nice blend of comedy, emotional situations, and heartwarming scenes. Staring Billy Crystal, a group of middle-aged friends decided to do a two-week cattle drive from New Mexico to Colorado lead by gruff Curly. The film will hit hard on mid-life crisis and going out and exploring and doing other things. I probably wont do a cattle drive but life is too short and might as well do the things you always wanted to do.
New Jack City

New Jack City is an awesome film that tells the tale of Nino Brown and the two cops who try to bring him to justice in New York City. Wesley Snipes is at his best as Nino Brown. New Jack City is a film that shows how the crack epidemic affected the black population in Harlem. A film that even stars Ice T as a cop. This is one of the first films that influenced such films and shows as Snowfall and American Gangster. It’s all about the money and if you don’t like it, sit yo five-dollar ass down before I make change.
Hot Shots!

If you want a laugh, then Hot Shots! is where it is at. A parody of Top Gun and starring Charlie Sheen, this film is hilarious in many ways. Sheen plays Topper Harley, a talented fighter pilot who is plagued with ghosts of his father dying and unable to prepare for a mission to stop Saddam Hussein. This is one of the best parodies around and you will have no stop laughter. Sheen is at his best, but it is all about Valeria Golino as Ramada Thompson. Valeria is FOINE and I would go on any mission for her.
Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves

There are a ton of Robin Hood films in the world. I think the character is one of the most played characters on film or TV. I want to say that I like this version of Robin Hood. The film has a ton of stars from Kevin Costner as Robin Hood, Morgan Freeman as Azeem, Christian Slater as Will Scarlett, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio as Marian, and Alan Rickman as the Sheriff of Nottingham. Rickman has one of the best performances in the film and makes this film with his evil performance. The film isn’t too violent and has some comedic elements to it. Definitely worth the watch.
