Welcome to the top films of 2003! The year I graduated, and I will say that it was a monster of a year in film. I forgot all the films that came out in this year. Oh, the stress and agony that it caused because I only could pick ten freakin films. I wanted to make some exceptions and maybe go up to fifteen, but I have to stick with my guns. I know I’m about to piss off many people but once again, this is MY list of what I believe was the best in 2003. Why am I doing this to myself.
Finding Nemo
One of the BEST and CUTEST Pixar films ever made. A film that made Clown Fish popular and coined the phrase, “Just keep swimming.” Also, the film has some of the coolest sea turtles ever made in film. Finding Nemo is straight up hilarious, fun to watch and has memorable scenes. He touched the butt or shark bait ooh ha ha.
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
One of the most famous rides in the Disney parks is Pirates of the Caribbean. Disney brought the ride to life with Johnny Depp playing Captain Jack Sparrow. After this film, everyone wanted to be a pirate. It is still one of the best and holds up till this day. Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate’s life for me.
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
The epic conclusion to an epic film series. Peter Jackson pulled out all the stops with the last of the J. R. R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings series. This is how you end a fantasy series that has great story telling and special effects. The film was a monster as it won all eleven awards for which it was nominated, tying the record for most Academy Award wins.
Kill Bill: Volume 1
I have to give it to Quentin Tarantino. When you can make a film that combines martial arts films, samurai cinema, blaxploitation, and spaghetti Westerns into one and not make it seem stupid, you deserve major props. Starring Uma Thurman as the Bride who wants major revenge against her former crew and their leader, Bill. This film has crazy sword fighting scenes, great music and amazing storytelling.
The Matrix Reloaded
The first Matrix was a massive hit. The sequel wasn’t up to that standard but damnit, the film was fun and exciting to watch. Neo became a bigger badass and the fighting/action scenes were fun to watch. The highway scene is thrilling. It boasts two long ass fighting scenes that is crazy. The music is top notch. One downside is that it went completely CGI heavy and ruined some of the film.
28 Days Later
It has been a while since a I was scared in a film. 28 Days Later is one of those film that is intense and thrilling. When a bicycle courier awakens from a coma, he discovers that London is completely abandoned. The opening scene is creepy as no one is around. The film is credited with reinvigorating the zombie genre of horror film. Watching the highly contagious, aggression-inducing virus zombies chase people makes you want to get in shape. It is insane how terrifying this film is and its shot in a spooky way.
School of Rock
Who would’ve thought that a struggling rock guitarist who poses as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school and makes a band of fourth graders would be a funny ass film? Black is funny as he seems to be in his element as a wild and crazy rocker. The kids are hilarious as they each bring a different dynamic to the film when they play their instruments. The scene when homeboy said you’re tacky and I hate you was special. I almost lost it. It also has a very young Miranda Cosgrove and other stars.
Elf
One of the funniest Christmas movies around. I debated on putting this on the top ten. It was very close to being put off the list, but I have had many laughs from this film. The centers on Buddy, a human raised by Santa’s elves. He embarks on an adventure to meet his biological father. It is hilarious to watch Ferrell perform and do his thing. The jack-in-the-box scene still gets me every single time.
X2: X-Men United
If anyone knows me, I love the X-Men. X-Men: The Animated Series on Fox was where it was at. I loved when the first X-Men film came out because it brought to life my all-time favorite character, Wolverine. Thank you forever Hugh Jackman. X2 is a worthy sequel to the first. This is where Wolverine goes beast mode. Enjoy a great comic book film.
The Italian Job
This is a fun movie to watch. With an impressive cast, Wahlberg isn’t too much or overacts. He is actually pretty subtle this time around. The plot with getting back against one of their crew members is entertaining. Actually, the whole cast is fantastic as each one has enough screen time to do their thing. Definitely watch this film and then think of a plan to steal jewels. Don’t do that last part.
