2005 was a progressive year in film. Frank Miller showed artistic form with Sin City and an ensemble cast. Christopher Nolan came strong on the scene with the start of his trilogy with I’m Batman. We were introduced to a love story on Brokeback Mountain. We saw what it really means to crash weddings and what happens when a couple work for rival companies. Oh, 2005 was a fun year in film.
Sin City
From the mind of Frank Miller’s graphic novel, the film is based on the first, third, and fourth books in Miller’s original comic series. The film is visually stunning as much of it is in black and while with few colors standing out. Each story is well acted as many will try to name each actor in each story. There are a ton of actors and actresses in this film.
Batman Begins
The first entry to the Christopher Nolan Batman series. Nolan revamped the whole series and brought more of a realism to it. Bruce Wayne played by Christian Bale starts the journey of Batman and showed how he became the vigilante that everyone loves today. As Bale states, “I’m Batman!”
Brokeback Mountain
Brokeback Mountain should’ve won the Best Picture award at the Academy Awards. The film, starring Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal follows a complicated relationship between two American cowboys. The film was a landmark in LGBT cinema and should be praised for the subject matter and the love of the two characters. Many people have to admit that it is a sad film of lost love.
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
Based on the 1950 novel The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, comes the live action film. As in the book, four children are transported to Narnia after walking through a wardrobe. They ally with the lion Aslan (voiced by Liam Neeson) against the forces of Jadis, the White Witch. The film is stunning to look at and has those Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings vibe but way toned down.
Wedding Crashers
No lie, even I have to admit that Wedding Crashers is one of the best films of this year. I really didn’t like Owen Wilson, but Vince Vaughn is freakin hilarious in this film. The film follows two divorce mediators who crash weddings in an attempt to meet and seduce women. They crash the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury daughter’s wedding and hilarity ensues.
Constantine
DC Comics has a lot of strange and dark characters. Constantine is one where Lucifer himself would come to collect his soul. The cool and calm Keanu Reeves stars as John Constantine, a cynical exorcist who is trying to buy his way into Heaven. The film is dark with great effects and some good performances. It is an entertaining film.
Mr. & Mrs. Smith
The film that brought Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie together. A romantic spy comedy where a middle class married couple are in therapy/counseling because their marriage isn’t what it used to be. They soon learn that after ten years of marriage that they are assassins employed by rival agencies. They are soon assigned to kill each other. Vince Vaughn is hilarious in this film and the fight scenes are very entertaining.
The 40-Year-Old Virgin
Hilarious! That how you describe this film. Steve Carell is perfect as Andy, the 40-year-old virgin and employee at an electronics store. When his coworkers find this out, they set up a plan to get him some booty and lose his virginity. The whole thing will give you laughs that might make you cry tears of joy.
Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith
I have the HIGH GROUND!! In the final film of the Star Wars prequel, you see the full turn of Anakin Skywalker to the boss of Darth Vader. Boy did Anakin jump straight over the line to the Dark Side with hearing the tale of Darth Plagueis the Wise, to younglings to going crazy. Plus, this is a Star Wars film.
King Kong
This might be debated but King Kong by Peter Jackson was entertaining back in the day. The CGI doesn’t hold up but Peter Jackson tells a great story even though it is long as hell. The best action is on the island when Kong faces off against the dinosaur. Seeing all the strangest, big ass creatures on the island is crazy. Now the New York scene is a little meh but overall it is still a great film
