We hit the midway point of the 2000s. The year is 2006 and there were plenty of films to get excited over in this years. A new James Bond was introduced to the world. We saw creatures come to life in a museum. It was even the year Superman returned and maybe didn’t fly as high. It was a year that had movies all over the spectrum do great and made people think. Get ready for my top-10 films of 2006.
Casino Royale
In his first turn as the famous MI6 spy, Daniel Craig brought a new element to the James Bond series. This was one of the best James Bond films in a very long time. Daniel Craig played bond as a man who was newly promoted to the role of 007. In this film, Craig was hard, real, and dark. The film where no-limit poker was the setting. Also, it had Eva Green, and we all know how much I love Eva Green.
The Prestige
Give it up to Christopher Nolan to make magic into a thriller. Nolan gives Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale the center stage as two rival stage magicians in London. Each has their own version of a teleportation trick and they both try to out due each other and learn the other’s secret. Things get real in this film as you learn the steps of doing a great trick. Nolan has a final trick up his sleeve with the ending that will blow your mind.
Children of Men
We get a bunch of dystopian movies where something happens and the world goes to shit. In Children of Men, it takes place in 2027 and human infertility have left society on the brink of collapse after two decades. Clive Owens plays a civil servant in the UK who must help refugee Kee escape chaos as she is the first person pregnant in two decades. Shit gets really real in this film.
Crank
Crank is a high-octane film that is crazy to watch. Starring Jason Statham as Chev Chelios, a British hitman based in Los Angeles, dude is poisoned by the mafia and the only way to live is he must keep his adrenaline flowing constantly. Watching Chev do anything possible to stay alive is crazy. He goes to the extreme length from taking drugs, publicly fornicating with his girlfriend, and getting into fights.
Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby
“If you’re not first, you’re last.” Talladega Nights is a funny movie with classic one liners and a crazy story. Starring Will Ferrell as Ricky Bobby, an immature yet successful NASCAR driver. There are many classic scenes like the cougar in the car and the kids are just hilarious. Ricky Bobby is an icon as he makes fun of NASCAR but it is all fun to watch. Don’t put that curse on me, Ricky Bobby.
V for Vendetta
“Remember, remember the fifth of November.” If you want to see a film that has its own take of George Orwell 1984, look no further than V for Vendetta. The film is set in a future where a fascist totalitarian regime has subjugated the UK. The story focuses on V, played by the versatile Hugo Weaving, an anarchist and masked freedom-fighter. It is crazy to watch as the world seems to be going in the direction of this film.
Cars
The Pixar animated film was one of the best films of the year. Lightning McQueen is a fast, red rookie hotshot race car who wants to be the best. When he finds himself unexpectedly detoured in the sleepy Route 66 town of Radiator Springs, his life soon takes a turn and realizes more to life. If you need another reason for this film, it is Paul Newman’s final voice acting theatrical film role.
The Departed
The Departed is another good mobster movie. Directed by Martin Scorsese, who also made films like Goodfellas, Gangs of New York, Casino, comes through with this Boston mobster film. There are strong performances all around and the story is about two cops who end up on opposites sides of the law. It is a fun cat and mouse type film.
Borat!
Borat is one of the funniest films around. Sacha Baron Cohen is freakin hilarious and a genius. Baron Cohen plays the leading role of Borat Sagdiyev, a fictional Kazakhstani journalist who travels through the United States. Some of the scenes are straight up wild and I have to give it to Cohen, he is not ashamed and does his craft to the highest level.
Slither
If you need a science fiction, black comedy horror film, then look for Slither. Written and directed by James Gunn. Set in a small town in South Carolina, shit goes weird and strange when a malevolent alien parasite crash lands on earth and starts spreading to the different inhabitants. The film is absolutely crazy but fun to watch.
