Taken
“I don’t know who you are. I don’t know what you want. If you are looking for ransom, I can tell you I don’t have money. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills, skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let my daughter go now, that’ll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don’t, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you.” Enough said.
Avatar
The king of the box office record, James Cameron epic and special effect film set new standards. The plot is a copy and paste from other movies, but it doesn’t take from the visually stunning film. James Cameron flexed his muscles with another film that ranks as number 1 all time in the box office. No one wants to roll through Pandora but let’s be real, Stephen Lang was a beast.
Inglourious Basterds
Quentin Tarantino returns with a big, violent, and entertaining war movie Inglorious Bastards. A movie where the main character states, “You probably heard we ain’t in the prisoner-takin’ business; we’re in the killin’ Nazi business. And cousin, business is a-boomin’.” Waltz was PHENOMENAL as Landa. His performance was chilling, cunning, meticulous, and a person in complete control of his environment.
Black Dynamite
Dynamite! Dynamite! Michael Jai White blaxploitation action-comedy film is one of the best and funniest films on this list. Going back to the old school and paying homage to blaxploitation films, you have the man who was part of the CIA and fights a president while trying to find what is killing the black community.
The Hurt Locker
The Hurt Locker is a film that everyone should watch and will definitely enjoy. Kathryn Bigelow needs and must be applauded for this film and the direction she displayed. This film is an action film that keeps the intensity high with bomb defusing. Jeremy Renner is fantastic in his role as a man who can’t get enough from diffusing bombs.
Up
This film is a classic for Pixar. The first 15 minutes are the realest you will ever see. It will hit you in the feels. A story about and elderly widower named Carl Fredricksen who go on a journey to South America in order to fulfill a promise that Carl made to his late wife Ellie. Along the way, he is joined by Wilderness Explorer Russell. You will LOVE Doug and his quest for a squirrel.
District 9
District 9 was one of those films that was entertaining and spoke on many themes like humanity, xenophobia and social segregation. When a giant spaceship rolls up and hovers over the South African city of Johannesburg, shit gets real in this entertaining film where one man tries to stop his transformation into one of the aliens.
Coraline
Sometimes, stop-motion can be a hit or miss. Coraline is a definite hit as this film is fun to watch and has some of the creepiest scenes. How can a kid watch this because the mother was creepy and the land through the door was also strange. I will say that this is a great film to watch during Halloween. Also, look out for creepy steel hands and talking cats.
Star Trek
Sometimes a film series needs a reboot and this version of Star Trek was on point. With a stylish, modern and cool looking feel, Star Trek returned with a force. The story was really good as an origin story with Kirk and Spock not getting along at all in the beginning. The acting and humor was spot and it was a joy to watch Star Trek movie again.
Drag Me to Hell
This was a horror film that straight-up impressed me. I have to give Sam Raimi props on this one. Let it be known that trying to impress your boss might not be in your best interest. When a loan officer denies to extend an elderly woman’s mortgage, the woman places a curse on her. Straight-up trifling right there. Homegirl needs to find a way to rid the curse or have her ass drag to hell. The tone, story, scares and acting are top notch.
