2012 was a great year as we saw the Avengers team up finally after their individual movies. James Bond returned in one of the best films of the franchise. Christopher Nolan completed his Batman trilogy with the fearsome Bane. Django made an appearance with Leonardo becoming a ruthless slave owner. There were so many films that this year was a fantastic and entertaining!
The Avengers
The MONSTER hit from Marvel that finally brought Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Hawkeye, Black Widow together to fight against Loki. This film was everything you want in a superhero Marvel film that gave all the superheroes equal screen time. Tom Hiddleston is excellent as Loki and brought him to a whole new level.
Skyfall
One of the best James Bond films of all time. Daniel Craig returns in his third film as the famous spy. This time, Bond faces off against Javier Bardem’s villain Raoul Silva, who was once a MI-6 agent turned cyberterrorist. This film is great as it seems that Bond is really losing his edge and that time is starting to catch up with him. Judi Dench is always great at the one and only M.
The Dark Knight Rises
The final film in the Christopher Nolan trilogy. Nolan concludes his epic film series with Bruce Wayne coming out of hiding after eight years. This time he must battle against the fearsome and terrifying Bane. Tom Hardy is great as the villain with being charismatic, powerful, and strong. Is the film as good as The Dark Knight? Nope but it is a very close second.
Django Unchained
Quentin Tarantino returns with a story that follows a black slave who trains under a German bounty hunter, with the ultimate goal of reuniting with his long-lost wife. Christoph Waltz as Dr. King Schultz was truly SPECIAL!! You can’t but love Waltz and his character. Even though I absolutely HATED the character Leonardo DiCaprio as “Monsieur” Calvin J. Candie should’ve been nominated and also won the Academy Award for this role. If you want to see the real face of an evil slave master, DiCaprio shows it as Calvin Candie.
The Hunger Games
The Hunger Games novel is awesome and I have to give it up to Suzanne Collins. The first film in the trilogy stars the lovely Jennifer Lawrence that is set in a dystopian post-apocalyptic future in the nation of Panem. In Panem, a boy and a girl from each of the nation’s 12 Districts are chosen annually as “tributes” and forced to compete in the Hunger Games, an elaborate televised fight to the death. This film really keeps you on edge and keeps close to the source material.
Dredd
Dredd is a great action movie that shows what the 1995 version should’ve been. Gone is the comic book/cartoony feel. That has been replaced with a gritty, violent, and fast-paced action film. It is extreme and fast-paced as the film is non-stop action. Karl Urban as Dredd was spot on. Urban played Dredd as a person who is feared and administers justice with an extreme lack of prejudice. The dude plays no games, and whatever the lawbook says, that is what you are getting.
21 Jump Street
This was a tough one but it made the cut. 21 Jump Street is freakin hilarious with Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum and Ice Cube. Adapted from the tv show, it follows dimwitted Schmidt and Jenko as the return undercover in high school to prevent a new drug. Seeing Hill and Tatum try to relieve their past is funny because it ends so badly. There is even a surprise cameo.
The Cabin in the Woods
When I first watched this film, it was funny because it met all the stereotypes in horror films. The story follows a group of college students who retreat to a remote forest cabin. While at the cabin, they soon fall victim to being attacked by monsters that are released by an underground facility. The white board with all the monsters is hilarious. The ending is quite funny and depressing but hey, maybe you can spot out all the monsters.
Ted
Ted is one of those films that catches you by surprise. A film written and directed by Seth MacFarlane, it stars Mark Wahlberg as John Bennett, a Boston child who wishes that his teddy bear, Ted, comes to life. The wish is granted and Ted becomes a talking bear. In adulthood, Ted and John’s friendship is one for the ages. This film is funny, raunchy and has some epic moments.
Wreck-It Ralph
Who doesn’t love arcade games? Have you ever wondered what the villains think of their arcade game? What Donkey Kong and several others think? Well, Wreck-It-Ralph is a hilarious film that tells the story of an arcade game villain who rebels against his “bad-guy” role and dreams of becoming a hero. With the voices of John C. Reilly, Sarah Silverman, Jack McBrayer, and Jane Lynch, this film will make you laugh.
