AFRO!!!!!!! Samuel L. Jackson has returned to the anime character with the big afro, number one headband, and sword that would slice anyone and everything. Afro Samurai: Resurrection is the sequel to the anime series. It is a story where one loses confidence and motivation only to have to work their way back up and whip ass all over again.
The story begins with Afro and his messed-up hair as he looks like hell. Afro is going through some shit at the start. Afro lacks a sense of purpose after taking his revenge on Justice. As the new owner of the Number 1 headband, Afro was supposed to become a god but spends days sitting around while making wooden sculptures. Dude hasn’t had a decent duel in years. One day that all changes when Jinno, that Teddy Bear head wearing, nonstop crying adoptive brother and his sister Lady Sio (Liu), shows up, beats the absolute shit out of him, and steals the Number 1 headband and Afro’s deceased father’s mandible. Let us pause for a second. Lady Sio is FINE! Thanks for that quick pause. Sio plans to resurrect Afro’s pops and use him to extract her vengeance while challenging Afro to obtain the Number 2 headband if he has the will.
After pondering, Afro gets his sword reforged and begins his quest once again. He ventures to a gambling house where he meets the last surviving member of the Empty Seven Clan, Brother 3, for information on the Number 2 headband. Brother 3 challenges ole Afro to a dice game and tries to cheat. Really, Brother 3? You going to try to pull that? First off, dude killed all your brothers and then you going to try and cheat a black man at dice. You done lost your damn mind! Afro learns that a ronin named Shichigoro has the Number 2 headband. After Afro saves Shichigoro’s adopted son, they battle for the headband. That fight is CRAZY. It is done during a party/parade where the DJ plays, and others enter the battle. It is intense, and no lie, Afro should’ve lost. You know that Shichigoro’s son will be looking for that revenge later in life.
The fight between Afro and his pops was pretty good. Afro was getting his ass handed to him. Also, Afro’s pops looked like he stayed in the gym and did nothing but pushups and bicep curls. The fight was one-sided, with Afro once again getting his ass handed to him. His pops were laying down that belt on his ass. Afro gains some newfound powers and defeats his dad.
The animation of this film was tier B or B+. It does its job and is very fun to watch. Nothing compared to Demon Slayer or some other great anime series, but this one isn’t God-awful. Some scenes really stand out to you, especially with the fighting. The animation adds to the overall appeal of the fight scenes. They are beautifully done and fun to watch. Where else can you find people getting stabbed and seeing red blood flying all over the place. The Afro vs. Shichigoro fight was the one to watch
The music was on point once again. RZA produced the album for this anime film, and he has a great eye for anime songs that mix with black culture. You get it all with subtle songs that mix rap and hip-hop. I hope to hear more of RZA in the anime world because he just knows great anime music.
Afro Samurai: Resurrection is a great sequel to the series. It deals with the loss of motivation after one takes their revenge. Do I think there will be another season? Probably not, but if you want, grow out that afro and get a Number 2 headband and a sword. Go out and whip ass.
