Reel Talk: The Best Video Game Movies

In the words of my favorite YouTuber, Jacksepticeye, “I consider myself a gamer.” Not really. I play games here and there. I had the original Nintendo growing up with Duck Hunt and Super Mario Bros. Then I upgraded to the Sega Genisis while playing Sonic the Hedgehog. Hell, I even had the Sega Channel for a while. Let’s give props to the Sega Channel. It was ahead of its time but just didn’t work out. My family even had the freakin Virtual Boy. I don’t know how I didn’t go blind but that system was ahead of its time also. I also had the original Gameboy and the Sega Game gear. I remember saving up my allowance and buying the Sega PlayStation. Oh, that was the system. Then I switched over to the XBOX and was with it ever since. Halo 2 was my game along with GTA, Assassins Creed and Call of Duty. As you can see, I’ve been playing games for years.

If you read some of my stuff, you know I LOVE movies. I can watch movies all day long. Through the years the world of movies and video games have merged. I am going to admit that many video game movies are absolute shit. They are so bad, and none really seems to be awesome. Reel Talk here, I am going to present the top 10 best movie adaptation of a video game. I want to set some parameters. The film must be live action. Sorry, CGI version of Super Mario Bros. If the main character is animated but the rest of the cast is human, then you are clear. The film must be after a video game. Finally, no sequels. They must be the original film. Let’s see if I can do this because once again, there are plenty of shit video game movies. You might agree with these or not. Let’s admit that playing the game is more entertaining than trying to watch a two-hour movie. Here we go, turn on the PlayStation or XBOX and let’s dive into this.

#10: Uncharted (2022)

Via: Sony Pictures

I have played the Uncharted games many times from Naughty Dog. I have always enjoyed the adventures of Nathan Drake and his archaeological discoveries. When a movie was being made, I was very skeptical if it would be halfway decent. My excitement was a little high with Tom Holland and Marky Mark himself, Mark Wahlberg starring in the movie. The film is once again like many others with trying to find lost treasure. The film is pretty meh but you do get some great actions scenes like the plane scene.

#9: Rampage (2018)

Via: Warner Bros. Pictures

I know you have been in an arcade or even Dave & Busters and seen Rampage. Rampage is a classic arcade game from Midway. If you don’t know the background of Rampage, in the game, humans are transformed into strange, big-ass animalistic building destroying monsters. The three monsters are George, a giant ape; Lizzie, a giant ass lizard thing; and Ralph, who turned into a giant ass wolf. If there is one man who can fight off giant animals, that man is Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Johnson already made one video game movie in Doom, but this one was way more decent to watch. You do get plenty of destruction and chaos. You even get some crazy moments with a middle finger waving Gorilla.

#8: Gran Turismo (2023)

Via: Sony Pictures

I see you Gran Turismo! Coming out with a film that was actually really good and didn’t suck ass. Who would’ve thought that a car racing game would be one of the best video game adaptations around. I used to play this game a lot back in the day. The film stars Archie Madekwe as Mardenborough alongside David Harbour, and Orlando Bloom. This film hits all the right spots with training montage, intense races and it being a true story adds to the overall appeal of the film. You will get great racing effects and make it worth the watch.

#7: Resident Evil (2002)

Via: Sony Pictures

The film that spawned like ten sequels. Need to give it up to the original. Starring Milla Jovovich as Alice, the first installment follows an amnesiac Alice as she is taken into the underground research lab of Umbrella as they try to contain the T-virus. This film is pretty grounded with several iconic creatures from the games. This is only the beginning of what Alice can really do as in the later films she gets crazier, more action heavy and shows that she is a badass character who wants to take down Umbrella.

#6: Detective Pikachu (2019)

Via: Warner Bros

What type of Pokémon are you? I want to be the very best! Pokémon!!! Is a MONSTER hit. I have several Pokémon cards, and I also had the Gameboy games. I played Pokémon Blue, Red and Yellow all the time when I was younger. I’ve seen many animated films. The live action film was actually really good. Maybe it was because Ryan Reynolds, as the voice of Pikachu was funny and fit him. I think it was awesome to watch many of your favorite characters. I still love Squirtle and Blastoise! Oh, seeing Mewtwo was freakin awesome!

#5: Sonic the Hedgehog (2020)

Via: Paramount Pictures

One of my all-time favorite video games growing up was Sonic the Hedgehog. This film first started off with some criticism with the way Sonic looked. Sonic looked so bad and strange the first time the trailer came out. WTF was that? In a film starring Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik the film is fun as it follows Sonic who teams up with James Marsden to stop Robotnik. Carrey’s performance was the best, but the film was fun and entertaining and who wouldn’t want to have a chili dog with Sonic. The film wasn’t overbearing or boring. It has the right amount of each character, and you will enjoy it. Gotta go fast!

#4: Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001)

Via: Paramount Pictures

Lara Croft is by far one of the most beautiful and badass female video game characters of all time. Lara Croft is FOINE! She is the female version of Indiana Jones but way cooler. Hear me out once again, Angelina Jolie was an amazing Lara Croft. The first film might’ve not been the greatest with story but damnit, Jolie brought was who you came to see. She had the sex appeal, charm and coolness that this character is all about. It is one of the few times that a video game film worked and even doubled its budget.

#3: Street Fighter (1994)

Via: Universal Pictures

Hear me out! Street Fighter was one of my favorite games growing up. It was all about Street Fighter 2 and my gurl, Chun-Li and her thick thunder thighs. She was by far the strangest character in the game. All you had to do was jump, flip with a kick, and quickly transition into her fast leg attack. Do that twice, and it was game over. As far as the film goes, it is so bad that it’s good. Oh, this film is bad, but you do get great one-liners. Hell, this film even has Kylie Minogue as Lieutenant Cammy White. The best part of this entire film is Raul Julia as General Bison. RIP. You have to like a film that at least makes an attempt at being campy as the video game. Right?

#2: Mortal Kombat (1995)

Via: New Line Cinema

MORTAL KOMBAT!!!!!!! I say it before, and I say it again, Mortal Kombat is the best video game adaptation into film ever. Is it like a poor man’s version of Enter the Dragon? Of Course. BUT if you liked the video game, then you will at least like this film a little. It’s not the best, but it is better than other video game films. You have to admit that the opening music is awesome. Where are the glowsticks! This film has it all from Scorpion yelling, “Get Over Here!” Sub-Zero, Raiden, Sonya Blade, Johnny Cage and all the other characters. This film isn’t fancy. It gets to the point and makes you want to, “Test Your Might!”

#1: Werewolves Within (2021)

Via: IFC Films

Werewolves Within is that surprise film that is made after a video game. If you have seen video game movies, you know they can be bad. I want to say that Werewolves Within is one of those films that is surprisingly funny and entertaining, and the film is nicely put together. When watching the movie, the film’s concept and storyline align with the game Clue. Out of all the residents, you try to figure out who the killer or werewolf is. You know it’s not Finn because he is way too nice and has no evil bone in his body. What the film does exceptionally well with its Clue-like story is to put everyone in one place. When that blizzard hit and everyone had to be moved to the lodge, you knew terrible things would happen. You don’t expect how funny and crazy everything happens in the film.
