2020 was a confusing year for many. It was the year when the pandemic dropped on the world and completely shutdown the world. Even though great films came out, people had a hard time seeing them with social distancing. Most films dropped on the streaming services as people were inside all day. The movies that dropped were still great. An anime led the worldwide box office while other films reversed time, a comic book villain got her voice from a clown, an invisible person and what your soul looks like. 2020 will be a year that will live on in history.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train

Via: Aniplex of America

Demon Slayer is one of my all-time favorite anime series. The animation, story and fight scenes are top notch. The direct sequel to the first season, Mugen Train is freakin awesome. The film grossed $507 million worldwide and was the highest-grossing film of 2020. This film is all about the Flame Hashira Kyojuro Rengoku and his mission to figure out what is going on the Mugen Train. You will not be disappointed with this film.

Tenet

Via: Warner Bros/Syncopy

Christopher Nolan is one of my all-time favorite directors. He is number 2 on my list. Tenet is one of those films you have to watch a few times to really get and appreciate the art and story of this film. The first time I watched it; I was like WTF is this? A film that follows a former CIA agent who is recruited and sees that things can travel back through time. It is a fascinating concept and film. I have to give major props to John David Washington and Robert Pattinson for their performances.

The Invisible Man

Via: Universal Pictures

I watched this film when it first came out in theaters and was blown away by it. A reboot of the 1937 film and loosely based on H.G. Wells’ classic novel, this film stars the beautiful Elisabeth Moss. She manages to escape her abusive ex-boyfriend only to feel like she is being stalked by him after he acquires the ability to become invisible. This film is thrilling and intense. The kitchen scene is insane and a must watch. Moss’ performance is top notch and should be commended.

Soul

Via: Pixar

Everyone should take a moment to watch this film. Soul is a great film that will make you think about life and its meaning. If you ever thought about your life and are waiting for an opportunity for something in your life, watch this film. The characters are outstanding, and Foxx and Fey deserve all the praise. This is one of Pixar’s finest movies. It has a heavy story, but it is one worth watching.

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom

Via: Netflix

This film is PHENOMENAL!! This film is fantastic because of how the story is told. Since this is after a play, it’s told and acted in a play form. The beauty of this film is the story and the tension the characters have towards each other or, mostly, Levee. Ma’s band knows their place as they want to get paid. This is the great and my king, Chadwick Boseman’s last film. He should’ve won the Academy Award and Viola Davis should’ve received far more praise.

Love and Monsters

Via: Paramount Pictures

Love can make you do some crazy shit. Love can have your mind all over the place and make you think you can take on the world. There is nothing like being in love. The concept and story are pretty cute. It’s not over the top, nor is it bland. It actually is a really nice blend of sci-fi, romance, and dystopian, all nicely rolled up. When the world goes to shit with big-ass monsters attacking, that is one thing. When you decided to cross 80 miles for a girl, you might be crazy but it is an adventure.

One Night in Miami…

Via: Amazon Studios

This movie is awesome! Based on a stage play, it is a fictionalized account of a meeting between the legends of Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, Jim Brown, and Sam Cooke after Ali beat Liston for the title. The film shows major tensions between Ali and Cooke. Things get really tense as each legend deals with what is going on in the US and racial injustice. The film stars Kingsley Ben-Adir, Eli Goree, Aldis Hodge, and Leslie Odom Jr. and they all did a phenomenal job. Odom was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor. It is great to see these larger-than-life figures in one place.

Sonic the Hedgehog

Via: Paramount Pictures

Gotta go fast!!! My first gaming console was a Sega Genisis. The first game I had was Sonic the Hedgehog. I played that game religiously. When the film came out, I was skeptical like everyone else because they messed up Sonic’s look originally. Once they fixed that, the film was actually really good and entertaining. It’s one of the best video game adaptations around. Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik is hilarious and one of his best performances in years. This film works because Sonic is a kid and doesn’t really take anything seriously. This is how a video game movie should be.

Da 5 Bloods

Via: Netflix

Directed, produced, and co-written by the great and legendary Spike Lee. The film follows a group of four Vietnam War veterans who return to the country to retrieve their fallen squad leader and the treasure that they buried. Lee showed a film that dealt with PTSD but also the idea and appreciation of Black Power and being black in a country that didn’t give a shit about you, but you are fighting its war. The acting was FANTASTIC in this film with a HUGE shout-out to Delroy Lindo, who played Paul. Da 5 Bloods is a masterpiece made by Spike Lee.

Birds of Prey

Via: Warner Bros. Pictures

The beautiful and fabulous world of Harley Quinn has been put on full display in Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey. Unlike Suicide Squad, Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey is actually an excellent and fun movie. Now I will say this, I was completely caught off guard of the language and the R Rating. The story does its justice and does a great job is with the way Harley and the woman go about getting their independence from the men who hold them down. The fighting scenes are actually really great and fun to watch while showing off each character’s strength. Harley Quinn might be a skinny girl, but damn can she wield a bat and shotgun.
