What if your diary suddenly changes where you get to see into the future or know what was going on altogether.

Along with those lines, who is your favorite god? Is it the mighty Zeus, or is it Hera? How about Ares or even the mighty Poseidon? Which one of these gods’ powers would you like to have for your own? If one of the gods decided to hold a “little” competition to become the next in line of their throne, would you take it? Just think about it, the power of the seas at your fingertips.

Yukiteru Amano is an odd junior high student that has trouble making friends and socially awkward. He spends his days writing in his diary on his cellphone as he likes to be a spectator to all that is around him. During the lonely times, he spends time in an imaginary world speaking to his imaginary friends, Deus Ex Machina, the God of Time and Space, and Muru Muru, Deus’s servant.

Looking for a way to transfer his powers to a new person to take his godhood, Deus grants Yukiteru’s cell phone the ability to record the future for the next 90 days. Yukiteru excited that he can now be one step ahead of everyone, uses his diary to avoid bullies and cheat on tests. After evading a killer, Yuiteru soon learns that Deus is an actual god and forces him into a battle royal with eleven other people. The other participants each have a diary that can predict the future just like him but with different unique abilities designed for the user.

The rules of the game are simple: only one can be the victor. One must kill all other diary users and then claim the throne for themselves as the new God of Time and Space. With nowhere to turn, Yukiteru must team up with his obsessive stalker Yuno Gasai to win the game and become a god.

The Future Diary is one of the most violent and messed up anime I have seen. I had watched the Future Diary when it first came out. I was expecting some sappy high school love story. One where boy or girl has a major crush on a character and writes in a magical diary that grants whatever wishes they had. I was freakin’ wrong by a very, very long shot. Not only did I get an extremely violent anime. I was introduced to one of the most insane and creepy girlfriends of all time. Just thinking about her makes my spine shiver, but yet she is what carries the overall show.

I don’t even know where to start with reviewing this show. I guess the storyline. As the title would suggest, it has to do with a diary, but the overall theme was actually interesting. A battle royal to become a god. Eleven people fighting it out to be the God of Time and Space. Not a bad little reward if one can survive. Where the diary part comes in is that all the participants’ cell phones are the diary, and it tells them things based on their life. Yuki’s cell phone pretty much logs everything he sees while Yuno’s cell phone tells her everything that Yuki is doing. I will say this, those cell phones are straight-up old school. The flip phone and everything. I haven’t had a flip phone since 2003. The battle royal is pretty good. The story is pretty much Yuki and Yuno against everyone else. NO ONE goes for the other characters. Not much of a battle royal. More like a Mortal Kombat fight ladder. What I will say, the ending is straight-up insane. A nice little twist to set everything off.

The violence is straight-up insane in this one, and it’s all thanks to Yuno. Yuno gives absolutely ZERO F**KS when it comes to killing people or people she thinks is getting way too close to Yuki. Homegirl will swing an ax at your head and keep moving. Sometimes the violence is so over the top that in some scenes, it really didn’t need to be a part of it. For example, Yuno rolls up in a station, and straight-up unleashes her assault rifle on everyone. There was no need for that. There seems to be an explosion in every episode. The second episode saw a school get blowing up. Saw the characters, and all get obliterated. Really? We need to see all that.

As far as the characters go, there are only really two that this show will make you care about. The first is Yukiteru Amano or Yuki for short. Yuki is by far the most annoying and pathetic main character I have seen in a good while. He whines and complains so much. He is by far pathetic and yet he has the “best” girl who would pretty much do anything for him. How the hell you get kidnap by your girl? In all seriousness, Yuki is a punk-b***h!

On the other hand, Yuno is by far the star of the whole show. Her craziness carries this show to new heights. She is a high string stalker and straight-up crazy. No restraining order will work on her. She ain’t got time for that. When she says she will kill and die for her man, she will do it at all costs. When homegirl takes out her knife, run for the hills because she is going to cut a b***h. You know Yuno is crazy after the first episode. What makes Yuno even better is her backstory and her big secret. That is when things get crazy. Yuno is by far one of the best anime girlfriends that you need to move to a different country to get away from.

With all that said, the anime does a lousy job with the other characters. With a battle royal, each opponent seems to get a maximum of two episodes before they are killed off. One episode to tell the viewer who they are and how they got their diary. The next episode to say goodbye. After the first three kills, you really don’t care about the other characters and just want to see how crazy Yuno is. The creators seemed to not care about them either. They give everyone numbers, so it’s like, “you have a name, but you won’t be on the screen that long for anyone to care.” The only other character that the show will make you like is Minene Uryū, aka Ninth. She is a complete badass. She is scary in the beginning, but towards the end, you feel for her and actually warm up to her.

The Future Diary is a good anime that is completely insane, over the top, intense, and extremely violent. The story is pretty good with the whole battle royal and becoming a god. It’s all about Yuno in this anime. The only reason to watch this anime is too see how crazy Yuno gets and what she is willing to do. Give this anime a chance and see what the future holds for the characters.
