Today’s excellent entry comes from the all time great gangster film, The Public Enemy.
From the clip provided by astique333 and Warner Bros. comes what I must say is a slap that actually used food. You should never hit a woman but this one set the tone back in the day for a gangster film. Tom Powers just woke up and is very hungover and his loving girl is just talking to him. Powers is tired of hearing her talk and giving him what he calls “Lip.” Powers delivers one of the most jaw droppings slaps/face palms in movie history. We call this the “Grapefruit Slap.”
Now I condone violence against women. Gangster films are known for violence against women but this slap/face palm is something that had never been done in film before. Powers takes that grapefruit and smashes it into Kitty’s face. He had some sass on his face also. The reaction on Kitty’s face was pure shock. Just for the use of fruit, the time period and reaction makes this an iconic slap. Once again, don’t smush a grapefruit in your lady’s face. You will get killed or whipped up on.
