Review:

I swear that anime series are all starting to look and feel the same exact thing now. It’s beginning to be like Hollywood, where there is ZERO original thought behind a story. I feel like that copy and paste tab is hot on animators and storytelling people’s minds now.

Special 7: Special Crime Investigation Unit is another anime where we have a mixture of races like elves, dwarfs, vampires, and God knows what. It’s like the freakin Lord of the Rings up in here. But set in present-day or future Tokyo. We have a “special” unit named Special 7 that combat people who are extraordinary. If you are an elf, you are already extraordinary in the world.

The story of this anime takes a while to get going, and it’s only 12 episodes long. The first episode draws you in, and you are like, okay. Shit burning all around, and some dude helps a young boy and tells him to defend the world and all that. It was intense, and then it went downhill with nine years later and the boy becoming a police officer. Oh, and the only reason for Special 7 is to fight against a criminal organization named “Nine” that seeks to reclaim the power of the dragons, the legendary creatures that were said to have once ruled the world. Yep, had to throw in some dragons in there. It wouldn’t be a decent anime without those pesky dragons. What is funny about this Special 7 group is that they work together, but no one seems to want to work together, and all have their own agenda of doing things. I didn’t pay attention to most of it because it felt like an absolute bore.

One of the highlights of this anime is the animation. I can really tell when some animation studios care just a tad about the quality they put out. This one was decent. The characters didn’t look clunky, and it was a relatively smooth animation. Is it amazing? Naw, but it does the job. One thing I am seeing more in anime is the CGI use, and it just doesn’t add to the anime at all. Please stop because it looks out of place. Case in point was the car chase scene. Even the freakin dragon was drawn in a great way.

The characters are pretty interesting. Seiji “Rookie” Nanatsuki is a bright eye, wet behind the ear type detective who wishes to be like the person that saved him nine years ago. His arc is nice as he is the one who has powers in the end. Shiori “Charisma” Ichinose is one of my favorite characters. With a nickname called charisma, you got to be a badass. One of the funniest things about him is that he misses everything like a freakin Star Wars Trooper when shooting.

Special 7 is an okay anime but one with a story that has been shown far too many times in terms of plot. If you watch enough anime series, you will start seeing the plot points over and over again. The animation is pretty good, and some of the characters are decent. Give this anime a look if you’re bored.
