What if mythical creatures were real and they got to stay at your house? Which ones would you like as a roommate? Would it be a mighty centaur or a lamia or a harpy? What would y’all do, and what adventures would you go on? It would be crazy to see these mythical creatures in the real world, but stranger things have happened. Monster Museum is an anime where mythical creatures descend upon Japan as a foreign exchange student-type program. The only thing is that craziness ensues for one specific character.

The Japanese government has a secret that just became known to the public. That secret is that mythical creatures such as centaurs, mermaids, harpies, and lamias are real and not of legend. Throw out the mythology because they are living with us. The government decided to reveal the existence of the creatures and passed the “Interspecies Cultural Exchange Act.” Most of these mythical creatures have become part of human society by living with families in a student foreign exchange program. The difference is that there are significant restrictions and duties. One of the restrictions is that there can be no harm and relations between the two species.

Monster Museum starts in the great city of In Asaka, Saitama. Unbeknownst to him, Kimihito Kurusu has volunteered to be part of an exchange program. One day, Kuroko Smith, a government agent, arrives and drops off the very shy Miia, a lamia, at his door. Not having the heart to send her away, Kimihito opens up his home and asks her to stay. As life for Kimihito and Miia goes on, more and more mythical creatures start arriving at his home either by accident, forced upon him by Smith, or they force themselves on him. With each new housemate, Kimihito’s small house changes every time. Things quickly change when word gets out that a new law might pass where human-mythical creatures could be legal. Soon, everyone in his house has an eye for him to be their husband. Kimihito must now navigate through the hearts of so many that live in his house.

Yoooooooooooo!!! I will say that this was one of the craziest anime series that I have watched. It is HIGHLY sexualized, but it is also quite funny. I found it hilarious how Kimihito always found himself in some compromising situations. The story is funny, the characters are extraordinary, and everything about this anime is really crazy, and I wish there was a season 2. I was about to say one season was enough, but if you have seen High School DXD, then this anime deserves a second season.

I actually seen this anime a few years back. I couldn’t remember what happened and just remembered there were a few mythical creatures as the main characters. When it showed up on a streaming service, I decided to watch it and see what it was all about again. As I watched, it slowly started to come to me how crazy and sexualized this anime really was.

The story is quite simple but insane. It starts off with Kimihito, who is did not put his name down for a particular exchange program. When Miia is dropped off at his door, his caring heart takes her in. This started a whirlwind of other mystical female creatures coming to live with him. The biggest thing is that each one wants to be his bride. Kimihito finds himself in situations that make him seem perverted or trying to have a good time. Yet, the story goes with him helping and providing for each lovely lady that lives with him. The man is a kind-hearted playa.

When I say that this anime is overly sexualized. It is off the charts and then some. If you want to see nudity, this anime has it in extreme ways. I have never seen so many characters with their boobs popping out or in their underwear. Making people blush all over the place. Yet, every situation is funny as hell. Some of the most comic scenes deal with Kimihito. Episode 6 was hilarious. When Miia was molting. Kimihito must help take off the skin. The scene is overly sexual, but when Kimihito tries to grab the last piece and accidentally goes into Miia’s forbidden zone, I almost died laughing. All the analogies with the hole in one, coming in, bull’s eye, bowling a strike is hilarious. Also, in episode one, Miia and Kimihito go on a date. The anime shows the discrimination of how people criticize Miia for being different and that it is against the law if she fights back. The scene is hilarious because Miia and Kimihito end up in a love hotel where Smith blows a hole in the wall but also because the disrespecting couple shows up again. As they throw insults, Kimihito gives a punch that blows out a wall. There are so many funny scenes that it is crazy to pick just one.

Each character is incredible in their own way. Kimihito is the typical guy who is kind to everyone and can’t hate because he is so loving. Miia is a lamia who is the first to come live with Kimihito. Homegirl has a pleasant personality, but she is also very protective of Kimihito, thinking she was the first in line. Yo, her tail can move so fast if you are not looking. Papi is a harpy and the complete airhead of the group. She is funny and acts childlike. She is swift to take off her clothes and then fly off somewhere. Cerea is the centaur of the group and the noblest. She is quick to pull out her sword and trample someone. Suu is by far the cutest of them all as she is an amoeba-like creature. She is just a water girl who is almost as airheaded than Papi. Mero is also one of the coolest as she is a mermaid princess. Rachnee is one that scares me because she is a spider but also a dominatrix who likes to put people in pain. Ms. Smith is the funniest as she works for the government and is the biggest moocher of everyone.

The animation is also one of the highlights of this anime. For one, it is crisp and colorful to look at. Yet, some scenes show how well the anime changes. When Miia gets mad at Papi, it seems like an eruption of lava around her. When a child is in a tree, Mila slithers up and shows a scary face through the leaves. The smoke coming from Papi’s head when she is trying to study. Whenever Kimihito is clueless about anything, his eyes are completely white with black circles around them. The animation in episode three, when the three girls fight and are like a dark cartoony effect. The animation is really done well.

Monster Museum is one of those anime series that is entertaining and funny to watch. If it wasn’t so sexualized, then it would be an anime for everyone to watch. You will find a character to root for as each one has their own personality and funny scenes. The animation is something to watch and enjoy. Watch this anime and have a laugh.
