There are many religions in the world. Each of them has a god that they pray to or believe is the one that created and rules over all. In many religions, there are angels that do God’s bidding. Some people believe that they have a guardian angel protecting them from harm. What if you were down on your luck and completely gave up on life? What would happen if you decided to take your own life and realize that angels exist? What questions would you ask your angel? What if God has decided to retire and has chosen you to compete against several others to become the new God? Would you go through the game and become the new God? Platinum End is an anime that puts that very concept to work.

Mirai Kakehashi has had a hard life. He is a young orphaned high school student whose life turned upside down when his family was killed in an explosion. Mirai has lived with his abusive aunt and uncle since that time. Depressed and with no life to look forward to, Mirai decides that the best outcome is to kill himself. As he attempts to end his life, he is saved by a Guardian Angel called Nasse. Nasse gives Mirai special powers and convinces him that he is part of a bigger purpose.

Nasse states that his aunt and uncle were responsible for his parents’ deaths and, if he wanted to, could get revenge against them. While learning the truth about his parents, Nasse also explains that God will retire in 999 days (funny because the number of the beast is 666), and thirteen candidates have been chosen to replace him. Nasse states that Mirai is one of the thirteen, and now he is forced to participate in a contest to decide who the next God will be. With the idea of becoming God, some of the other candidates will stop at nothing to win at all costs. Will Mirai become God, or will someone else claim the title?

This anime was a complete and utter WASTE of time. If there was an anime that copied and pasted a concept from another anime, this one did it. The story is exactly like The Future Diary. So, let me get this right, the story is where God is going to retire in 999 days, and thirteen candidates to replace him were selected. Almost the same exact thing as the Future Diary. The way you “win” is that the god candidate’s powers come from the rankings of the angels that oversee them. If an angel is “S” level, then the person gets a red arrow, where they can control someone for 30 something days. They also get a white arrow which kills anyone. Finally, they get wings that let them move at super speed. The lower the level, the less they get. Once again, copying and pasting. Oh, and the way you become a god candidate is to commit suicide apparently and have your guardian angel save you. Also, the main character is an absolute punk ass bitch, and then all of a sudden becomes a badass when love is on the line. Once again, this was a waste of time, and some of the characters were also a complete waster.

One thing I hate about this anime is that there is a complete build-up to face the main antagonist. The dude is strong, highly intelligent, and straight-up ruthless. His backstory is decent. Yet, after defeating the dude, they mess it up, showing that he was controlled by someone else. It was a twist that completely threw off this anime. Everything leading up to the final moment that the characters were going to fight was utterly wasted.

The other thing that I hated is that once the bad guy was defeated, we went through like eight or so episodes where we have a freakin scientist who goes into this monologue where God doesn’t exist and blah, blah, blah. I thought it was a waste because the action completely stopped at this moment, and we go into this grand logic of whether God and angels exist and how they exist. What was the most awful about this is that in the end, the winner didn’t want to get it. His mind was corrupted by the scientist, and then GOD KILLS HIMSELF, which wipes out all life. The scientist still was like, this isn’t right. You fucked up, man.

The animation of this anime is okay. It is not the greatest ever. The only interesting part to watch is how the red and white arrows were made. They look like CGI, but I feel like they are drawn differently. Some of the characters have unique appearances but once again, no need to talk about it too much longer.

As for the characters in this okay anime. Like I said, the main character, Mirai Kakehashi, is a punk-ass bitch. Dude was so whipped for his love and then didn’t want to kill anyone. His views were top-notch, but the way he went about things was awful. I’ll talk about the main villain and then move on because I don’t want to spend any more time on this anime. Kanade Uryu was a decent villain. Dude killed his sister, but when he took up the alias “Metropoliman,” you think he is a hero but then turns out to just kill anyone and everyone. Dude was ruthless, and the anime messed up his storyline so much that it’s pathetic.

Platinum End is a below-average anime. Yeah, it has some of its moments, but you can skip it towards the end. It was a complete rip-off of The Future Diary. What was the deal with the winner killing himself as God? I freakin didn’t like this anime at all and just watched the Future Diary. It is by far more entertaining.
