Life can be a cruel and sad place. An unnamed 34-year-old recluse is depressed and doesn’t believe in anything but his solitude. He was bullied in high school, and when his parents died, he failed to attend the funeral. This further put him at odds with everyone as he thought his life was pointless. One day, he throws his body in front of a truck, saving some kids but dying in the process.

Life has a funny way of handling things. In a twist of fate in life, the unnamed man awakens in another world and is named Rudeus Greyrat. Besides waking as an adult, he comes back as a baby in a new world. Rudeus maintained all his memories and knowledge from his past life. With an advanced mind and knowledge, Rudeus quickly adapts to the world of sword and sorcery. The young Rudeus shows advanced talents in magic and soon takes on the tutor of a young mage named Roxy Migurdia. With a second chance at life, Rudeus promises himself that he will take this second chance and live life to the fullest. As the years go by, Rudeus soon beings an adventure of a lifetime.

The story of this anime is phenomenal and a joy to watch. I didn’t know what to expect when watching this anime but found that I couldn’t stop watching it and wanted to start each episode after the first one ended. When It first started, it began with a person getting reincarnated into a body of a baby. You think this isn’t weird until you find out that dude has the memories of his former life. What I like about the season is that it doesn’t tell you immediately what happened to the person. You see his thoughts, and as the story progresses, we learn that the main character was a 34-year-old Japanese NEET who was evicted from his home after failing to attend his parents’ funeral. He ends up in his current world because he intercepts a speeding truck heading toward a group of teenagers. We start learning all this information when homeboy is in another plane and his old body.

The main story is the life the character develops in this new world. It is freakin amazing because the world he is in has sword and sorcery. The main character decides to take it upon himself to succeed in his new life and world. He is named Rudeus Greyrat. Rudeus, at a freakin young age, develops a strong affinity for magic due to his aptitude and early training. The story shows him with his first tutor, Roxy Migurdia, and his first real friend, Sylphiette. Now what gets confusing is that homeboy leaves home around seven or eight to go tutor another girl. During this time, he tutors Eris, who is a strong-ass fighter who is only a year older but doesn’t want to learn anything else.

All the adventures and his crew go on is incredible, but the start is when they get transported to another continent and must make their way all the way home. They end up in the demon continent and have to form a group to take on missions. This is where the juicy stuff happens because they fight all types of monsters but also learn that some people/gods are fighting behind the scenes. When the group runs into the Dragon God, homeboy whips so much ass that they don’t even stand a chance. You have to watch and really enjoy the story. It’s one where you must see it, to enjoy it.

The animation of this anime is superb. I love an anime that looks to be modern and well-drawn. Now some of the scenes are expertly drawn, as when Rudeus seems to talk to that one god. It is in a cloudy, dream-like area. The fighting scenes are so well drawn and engaging that they honestly keep you on the edge of your seat. When the trio fights a giant ass snake, nothing is misplaced or drawn in a way that makes it look off. This is one of those anime that uses subtle colors in the beginning, and as time goes on, it becomes darker.

The cast of characters in this anime is so well done that you can pick one of them and cheer for them. The first character is Rudeus Greyrat. Rudeus is an interesting character. Before homeboy was reincarnated, he was an overweight, depressed, 34-year-old NEET who became a recluse after high school. Homeboy was bullied for talking back to some bullies. When his parents passed away, he was further ostracized for missing the funeral. When he is reincarnated, he gives up his past life and swears that he will be better. Since he retained his memories from his past life, homeboy becomes a beast with magic but sometimes messes up because of his young age. What is not so great about Rudeus is his perverted ways. Why is it that some major male characters have this trait? It is getting somewhat stale.

One of the characters that annoyed the hell out of me but then seemed to warm up was Eris Boreas Greyrat. Eris is a noble girl and distant relative of Rudeus. Homegirl has a very short temper but has significant potential in Sword-God style. I give it to her; she always wants to improve on her skills. She delivered an iconic slap to Rudeus. Rolling with Eris is Ghislaine Dedoldia. Ghislaine is a straight-up BEAST, literally and figuratively. She is a swordswoman from a beast race with the Sword King skills. When Eris is kidnapped, and she finds the kidnappers, she unleashes hell upon them in a masterful way. I can’t forget about Ruijerd Superdia. Ruijerd is a kind man from the demon race who is on a journey to clear his people’s name. They were tricked in the war, and his race has become feared throughout. Homeboy is straight-up strong but has this thing about protecting kids and being extremely honorable.

Oh, I forgot to mention that this is one of the very few anime series without a main opening song. I was surprised to see that rather than having a break by playing a theme song, the anime chose to play several soft melodies, progressing the story just a little bit. This kept me far more interested in the anime than waiting the usual one to two minutes for the theme song to end.

Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation is an excellent anime with a ton left in the tank. I am excited to see what season two brings. Rudeus is an interesting character who remembers his past life and ends up in a sword and sorcery world where he finally excels. What I am interested in is seeing if he can become powerful. Watch this anime, get ready to laugh, and see some fantastic fight scenes.
