Oh, 1985!!! The year I was born. Right smack dabbed in the middle of the 80s. There are some really good and iconic films that came out in 1985. Some that I am really proud of. As always there are some stinkers but this is MY list of the top 10 BEST movies of 1985. These are also in no particular order.
The Goonies
Let’s start this off right. The Goonies HAVE to be on this list. It is based on a story by Steven Spielberg, so you know it was going to be great form that genius mind. The story is about a group of kids discover an old treasure map that takes them on an adventure to unearth the long-lost fortune of One-Eyed Willy, a legendary 17th-century pirate. The world was introduced to the Truffle Shuffle! The Truffle freakin Shuffle!
The Color Purple
I read the book and it is extremely powerful. I have also seen the movie and it should be watched by everyone. Here is something, Steven Spielberg directed this film. This is why he is so good because he told a story about black women and made it outstanding. The film got robbed at the Academy Awards. Whoopie, Oprah and everyone did an outstanding job. Watch this movie and gain some major strength from it. You will also probably cry.
Weird Science
I used to watch the TV show back in the day. The movie is by far weird but good. What are the qualities of a “perfect” woman? What is her personality and looks and everything else. This film set out and showed with the power of a computer, you can create the perfect woman. This film is hilarious at some points and Kelly LeBrock is BEAUTIFUL!
Back to the Future
If you could go back into the future, would you do it? Starring Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd, it follows the one and only Marty McFly and that cool as time traveling DeLorean. Marty is accidently sent back to 1955 by Doc. It’s awesome to watch and see as Marty meets his teenage parents and almost messes up everything.
Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome
The third entry to the Mad Max film series. This is when Tina Turner rolled up like the queen that she is. One of the original queens. This film is where Max is exiled into the desert by the ruthless ruler of Bartertown and then have some weird second half with saving kids. Mostly, the film inspired one of the greatest rap songs ever: 2Pac’s “California Love”
The Breakfast Club
You have to put this in the list as it speaks to everyone who went to high school. Everyone was labeled or categorized in some type of group. You could be a nerd, jock, princess or whatever, everyone was part of something. Yet, everyone is different and can learn from each other. Don’t You, Forget About Me!
Clue
A sleeper hit. Many, many years ago, Clue was the game to play. I played this game in class so much that I thought it was always Colonel Mustard, in the library with the candlestick. I’m watching you Colonel Mustard. It was all about Tim Curry in this film as he was fun to watch. I was in love with Lesley Ann Warren as Miss Scarlet and Colleen Camp as Yvette.
Pee-wee’s Big Adventure
This was one of the BIG movies during this year. When Pee-wee had his bike stolen and had to go on an adventure to recover it, it was insane. It is strange that Tim Burton directed this film because it doesn’t seem like his style. Who remembers the truck driver scene? Still give me nightmares to this day. Also, the Tequila dance scene will forever be a classic.
Witness
A film where Mr. Han Solo/Indiana Jones has to solve a case while going to an Amish village. This is a great film and slow build as a brutal murder happens and an Amish boy witnesses it. Harrison Ford does the damn thing with Kelly McGillis as a love interest. There are a few other people who became well known. Please, it’s not Amish Paradise.
Commando
This was a tough one, but I had to go with the Arnold film. Arnold is a badass in this film as his daughter is kidnapped. Also, Arnold walks around carrying a freakin tree. Dude’s arms are freakin MASSIVE! This film has many one-liners and over the top action. Worthy of my best list.
