This time around, I am going to change it up. We are going to look at movies that were made from Saturday Night Live (SNL) skits. SNL has produced some great movies and then they produced some movies that didn’t even get a chuckle. Even though a skit is popular doesn’t mean that it will make a great movie. Live from New York, these films are not funny!
It’s Pat (1994)
It is hard to get a 0% on Rotten Tomatoes. You telling me no one thought your film was decent. It’s Pat is one of those films that a 0%. You know how bad you have to be to get a 0%? Based on the Saturday Night Live character Pat it is about an androgynous misfit whose sex is never revealed. SNL has problems with making their movies in sketches and they just suck ass like this film.
Blues Brothers 2000 (1998)
The first Blues Brothers was an ICONIC and funny ride. One of the best SNL films ever made. After a long as hiatus, the band didn’t need to get back together in this film. It made ZERO sense. Half the people from the original was dead and the music was god awful. Sometimes you just need to stop while you’re ahead and not make a sequel. The movie definitely didn’t get a mission from God.
The Ladies Man (2000)
Another SNL film that failed majorly. If you remember the skit, The Ladies Man with Tim Meadows, it was pretty funny. Doing a whole feature film is another whole affair. As with the skit, the film focuses on the exploits of radio host and sex therapy expert Leon Phelps. There was no reason to make a film and if you wanted sex advice talk to a therapist or a sex worker.
A Night at the Roxbury (1998)
The skit, A Night at the Roxbury, was the first skit that introduced me to SNL. I used to stay up just to watch this skit. It was funny, enjoyable and fun to watch. The song, What is Love, has lived on. The film was the ultimate failure. Once again, sometimes a skit doesn’t need to be a 90-minute film. This is example of a good thing going to waste. There is no love in this film.
Stuart Saves His Family (1995)
A skit from the early to mid-1990s, the film follows the adventures of Stuart Smalley, who is a would-be self-help guru. Stuart tries save his family and tv show in this unfunny film that will make you want to go see your own therapist. Like most of the films from SNL, the skit for a couple of minutes can be a hit but the film not so much. Stuart like most of us might rely or our negative emotions. I am going to go wallow in self pity now from watching this film.
