If you read my review on the first Extraction, you know that I thought it was a freakin AWESOME thrill ride. I compared that movie to a Call of Duty mission. Extraction is like a live-action Call of Duty game. Watching it, I felt like the main character was doing a mission on Call of Duty, and everything was exploding with the shit hitting the fan and maybe the sky. Extraction is a total action movie. No more and no less. You know, I was freakin hyped when a sequel to the film was coming out. I knew the film would try to up the ante from the first film, and it succeeded. Extraction 2 is way better than the original and will keep you entertained from start to finish while making you hungry for the third film.
Holy shit, you don’t know how excited I am to talk about this film. I watched it at least four or five times before writing this review. What is this new action film about? After barely surviving the extreme and insane mission in Dhaka, Bangladesh, where he got shot in the neck, Tyler (Hemsworth) is recused and taken to the U.A.E. for medical treatment. His ride-or-die homegirl, Nik (Farahani), never leaves his side while he is in a coma. When Tyler wakes up and goes through extreme physical rehabilitation, and after nine long months, is released from the hospital. Tyler decides to retire from the mercenary game and live in a cabin in Austria provided by Nik and her brother Yaz (Bessa). Tyler lives a simple life with his dog and two chickens while trying to rebuild his life. Things seem fine until he is approached by a smooth stranger named Alcott (Elba). Alcott asks Tyler to do a mission and rescue Ketevan (Dalakishvili), the sister of his ex-wife Mia (Kurylenko), and her two children, Sandro (Japaridze) and Nina (Kovziashvili), from Georgia. Ketevan married Davit Radiani, one of the co-founders of the deadliest and extreme crime syndicate, Nagazi. David is in prison and unable to bribe his way out and, in return, has his wife and children moved into a maximum prison with him. Tyler must save his former family at all costs.
I don’t know about you, but this movie is AWESOME. I want to give major props to Sam Hargrave, who directed this film, and Joe Russo, who wrote the film. The pair made a film that keeps giving to the action fan but also has many elements of emotions, sorrow, and forgiveness. Yet, they didn’t hold back when it came to the action and made this film extremely thrilling to watch.
As with last time, the story is not special at all. You can probably think of many movies where the main character must go to a prison to rescue someone and bring them back to safety. This is nothing new. Even the son wanting to be part of his extremist father’s organization is quite common in other films and just adds a complicated and annoying variable to the whole movie. What I like about the story this time is that it added more of Tyler’s personal life into the film. It introduced his ex-wife and his ex-wife’s sister, who is the mission. The film showed that Tyler still has regrets over how his life ended with his ex-wife and leaving their child behind to complete a mission. You get a sense of Tyler’s pain throughout the film and how he coped with the situation. We also see significant connections between Tyler, his former sister-in-law, and his niece. There are precious moments that show Tyler isn’t all a killing machine and the mission.
Now, with the story out of the way, this film is all about the action, and it upped it tenfold. I keep saying this repeatedly, but this film series is a Call of Duty game, and I LOVE IT!! When Tyler and his team go into the prison to rescue Ketevan and her children, it starts off right until his little niece drops her stuffed animal. That is when all hell breaks loose, and Tyler must shoot his way out. The prison yard scene is INSANE as Tyler goes H.A.M. in that area. The action doesn’t stop even when they escape the prison. Tyler and his crew get on a train and have an epic fight scene with a helicopter and minigun. Had to throw in the minigun.
The film gives you a second to breathe and then is like, let’s amp this up again. The hotel tower scene shows you the extent to which the Nagazi were willing to go to kill Tyler and his crew. They looked like an extreme military unit and moved like one also. They surrounded the building and shot at everything that got in their way. They had RPG and assault rifles with some hardcore battle rifles. The movement Tyler and his team had to go through to save everyone is insane. I don’t know what it is with a gym and Tyler, but he seems to kill the most people in a gym. It was something to watch because a death happens that shows the extent a battle has on people.
Finally, the ending fight was a fantastic climatic battle. Tyler rolls into the Nagazi stronghold and blows shit up. The scene during this time is his fight with the leader of the Nagazi. The Nagazi strapped a bomb to his nephew and asked him to blow himself up. This punk-ass dude finally realizes that his uncle never really cared about him and starts to show tears and forgiveness. For the fight, it was intense, with each person getting in blows that would probably kill a normal person. I loved the ending of how Tyler took out the leader. What I also loved was the ending of the film. We are getting a sequel to this film series. I hope they go up to 10 freakin movies.
Extraction 2 continues the run of excellent action films that Netflix has made. Surprisingly, this film series is great to watch with its action and storytelling. I highly recommend watching this film series. Hemsworth is great in his role and a joy to watch. Throw this film on and then play Call of Duty after. Can’t wait for the third film.
