The vampire and human lovefest drama has been going on for a while. One of those series that promoted this was the Twilight series. A story about a vampire who falls in love with a human. These stories have become more and more popular. Thinking about it now, I feel like these stories were popular far before Twilight, but I could be wrong. Yet, the story is always about forbidden love and how things are complicated between the pair. Devil’s Line is another story about forbidden love and war between a vampire and a human.
Overview
In a world where vampires walk, they blend perfectly into the human population. These vampires are different as they do not require blood to survive; their bloodlust is based on their emotions. Extreme emotions significantly increase their bloodlust and turn them into the very monsters we know and are afraid of.
Tsukasa Taira, a 22-year-old university student, learns about the existence of vampires when her longtime friend is revealed to be one. He quickly gives into his bloodlust as he proclaims his love for her. Yuuki Anzai, a half-human and half-vampire hybrid, saves Tsukasa. Anzai’s strong will to never drink blood is constantly tested. As Anzai falls in love with Tsukasa, his will not to drink her blood will be tested. The question is, will he give into those urges and devour her?
Review:
Devil’s Line is one of those anime series that you will either love or hate. Hell, you might even go meh. It was an okay anime. It served its purpose by either being background noise or fairly interesting. I will go with the meh side for this anime. I wasn’t overly impressed, but it had moments to keep you interested. It’s one of those anime series that, if you watched many vampire movies, it is another recycled plot.
To me, Devil’s Line is like Twilight with a few action scenes. Now that I think about it, it reminded me a lot of Twilight. As stated in the overview, vampires have blended perfectly into human society but don’t require blood. When they become aroused or have intense emotions, they go on a bloodlust and become uncontrollable. They might not be the pale-ass people like in Twilight, but just like in those films, they do roll in society in some way. Like in Twilight, Tsukasa Taira, a 22-year-old university student, learns about vampires when her longtime friend attacks her. She is saved by Yuuki Anzai, a human and vampire hybrid. The story revolves around Tsukasa being drawn into Anzai’s world as he investigates vampire crimes. The two soon become romantically involved, which causes problems for both.
Like I said, it is almost like Twilight. If you like that story, then this anime is for you. I found the story okay but could do without all the forbidden love aspects of the story. Whenever a vampire or werewolf gets caught up with a human, you know there will be some type of forbidden love going on. This one is the same as Anzai, who is a cop but deals with his bloodlust by taking tablets. He seems to always take blood tablets to curve his appeal. The whole romance thing is blah, and I could do without it, as the sexual tension between the two is meh. I’ve seen it before. The ending really failed as it is the standard; the main male character goes away for a couple of years, and the main female character says she will wait. After the years passed, they came together again. I could’ve done without it.
The whole action and violent scenes deal with the standard; some group wants to upend society, and vampires should be the dominant force. During one fight, one of the characters pours blood into Anzai’s mouth, and he goes on a rampage. The character comments on how Anzai is much more powerful and interesting when he is on a rampage. The climax was intense as the city seemed to burn out of control, and police were hunting down vampires. Once the city is back to normal, life moves on.
As far as the animation goes, this is a freakin dark anime. The atmosphere is spot-on in this anime, with darkness and vampires roaming around. The animation plays to that feel, making everything seem dreary and not a world you want to be in. Yūki Anzai is drawn in the way of a person who looks like he needs 10 years of sleep. He does become cool when he goes vampire mode. His left eye turns reddish while his other eye stays human. When Tsukasa is on, the colors become bright, and it seems like she brings life to the anime. You can see the contrast in the characters. When things get real and intense, the anime goes the Hellsing Ultimate route with a feeling of going straight to the underworld.
The two main characters are forgettable. Yūki Anzai is an interesting character with being a half vampire/half human who works in the division 5 unit. He seems intense but has a deep love for Tsukasa. This shows that he is a person who has both aspects of his heritage in him and would do anything for Tsukasa. On the flip side, Tsukasa Taira is the naïve girl who becomes enamored in the world of vampires after being attacked. She goes from a scared girl to one who deeply cares and loves Anzai. She is pretty forgettable as the anime goes on.
Devil’s Line is one of those anime series that is interesting to watch, but in the end, you will not remember it and move on. The plot seems like Twilight, with more action and craziness. This would be a nice little anime to watch during Halloween. Give this anime a chance, but there are far better anime series out in the world to watch.
