I want to say this right now: the anime film Redline is one of the most entertaining, wild, and fun films I have seen in a while. I remember the first time I watched this film and was like, “What the fuck is going on?” This film is wild. It is like what Fast and Furious or whatever racing movie should be. Now, I will say that it goes WAY over the top, but the animation, story, characters, and music are all great and enjoyable. The freakin music called Yellow Line is one of my favorite songs because the way it was introduced in the film set the tone for the whole movie. Get ready and jump in your car to do some serious racing.
What is AMAZING anime film about? I am happy to explain. Redline is set in the distant future and revolves around a street racer named “Sweet” JP. JP has one of the most EPIC hairstyles a man can have in this world. The film starts on planet Dorothy, where JP is racing in the Yellowline, the final elimination race to the most famous race in the galaxy, the Redline. As JP drives to win the race, his mechanic, Frisbee, watches with a mob boss and fixes the race for JP to lose. Just as JP is about to win, Frisbee causes his car to explode as Sonoshee “Cherry Boy Hunter” McLaren becomes the final winner. While in the hospital and disappointed with the race, reporters rush into JP’s room to let him know he had been voted by popular demand to race in Redline on the hostile world of Roboworld, a planet ruled by militarist cyborgs. JP might have the chance to finally win the race he always wanted.
Once again, the story is straightforward, with JP racing in Redline. During the story, we learn about the friendship of JP and Frisbee, along with JP’s motivations. JP and Frisbee had known each other since they were kids, but when Frisbee got caught up in some bad times, JP threw a race and was found out about it. This had him ostracized from the racing community. JP’s real motivation for racing was seeing a dude win a race in a golden car and fur coat. Dude had two women on him and pointed at JP as he drove off. Nothing like something inspiring to convince you to become a racer. The other part of the story is the romantic component of the whole film with JP and Sonoshee. They knew each other when they were younger and had feelings for each other.
We are here for the racing, and it is entirely wild. It is some of the most unrealistic, entertaining, and funniest racing you will see in a film. You know what? It is freakin AMAZING!! As I said before, the Yellowline race set the tone, with each racer having some type of weapon to stop their opponent. The Redline race took everything to level one million. First was Roboworld, who didn’t want anyone on their planet, and they released everything in their arsenal to stop the racers. They literally sent their entire army and even a secret biological weapon to stop the race. The race was still insane with spinning across water or going underneath water, driving under the ground, and shooting each other; it was insane and fun to watch. You will definitely enjoy watching the race and all the drama. Yes, there is some drama in this film.
The animation in this film is also a major highlight. I read that the film took seven years to make or was in production and used over 100,000 hand-drawn frames. You know how insane that is, but hey, it sure did make an impact. The colors are bright, the creatures used are interesting and fun to look at. It has a new but old-school feel to it. I am telling you that this is one of the best-looking anime films, and you will not be disappointed.
I will talk about the characters, but there are quite a few. Sweet JP was one of the best characters because he seemed laid back and wanted to race. Nothing else in the world mattered to him but racing. Sonoshee was also a great female lead. She was BEAUTIFUL but also a hardcore racer. There are many characters, and each one is more wild than the next.
I don’t want to spend too much time writing a review because Redline is one of those anime films that you must watch. The story, racing, animation, and music are all great. I highly recommend watching this film because it is Speed Racer, but on every type of drug you can think of. You will enjoy it. Strap in and get ready for a ride.
