I remember the first time I ever watched Blood and Bone. I was in a barbershop when I lived in Virginia back in 2009. The barber had it on the TV, and I missed the film’s beginning. I sat and wondered what the movie was about because I saw Michael Jai White kicking some dude in the chest with freakin Timberland boots on. I was entertained by the film but had no idea what was going on, and my haircut was pretty quick. I immediately went home and googled what I saw and saw that the film had come out and called Blood and Bone. It took me a few years to sit down and watch this film. I will say that it was entertaining when I did because Michael Jai White kicked a ton of ass; it has some famous fighters at the time, like Gina Carano, Bob Sapp, Matt Mullins, and the late KIMBO SLICE.
Let me see, this film starts with Isaiah Bone (White) at the sink in prison. He is washing his shirt when JC (Slice) and his crew surround Bone with the plan to shank his ass. Bone warns them before taking a shiv and stabbing JC and then whipping more ass than anyone can count. When Bone is released from prison, Bone makes his way to LA. He seems to be on a mission as he is searching for someone. He rents a room from a lady named Tamara (Gaye). Bone heads to an underground street fighting competition and recruits Pinball (Basco) as his manager. Bone soon starts climbing the underground fighting world until he becomes at odds with James (Walker), a local mob leader tied to someone Bone knows. Shit will get real, and many bones will be broken, and blood will be spilled.
The story was entertaining, but fans will be far more interested in the fighting. In these films, there has to be a motive rather than complete ass-whipping. Bone comes to LA because his cellmate, Danny, was killed by JC. Danny asked Bone to look over his wife, Angela, and son. When Bone arrives, Angela is with James, who framed Danny for triple murder. Angela is also a drug addict and numb to the world. Danny’s son is a boy who lives with Tamara and spends his time looking out of the window. Bone wants to take down James and ruin his world, which he does.
People will watch and be entertained by the fighting scenes in this film. White makes the fighting scenes seem effortless while showing that Bone fully controls his moves and opponents. He makes Bone seem invincible as Bone watches someone warm up for two seconds and either defeats them with one punch or kick. The fight scenes are expertly choreographed, which will make you become hyped and want more. The one fight I wished went all out was between Bone and “Pretty Boy” Price. That was the fight I wanted to see go all out, as Price was a freakin douchebag. He seemed so cocky and arrogant. The fight was good but left you wanting more because Bone really started to whip that ass, but he tapped out to majorly screw over James.
Michael Jai White was the perfect choice for this role. He made Bone seem believable but also maybe someone who couldn’t be defeated. White is built and has the body of a Greek God! If Terry Crews could fight, that would’ve been an awesome match-up. White shows Bone as a man who can do anything in the martial arts world. He should try out for UFC because he seemed like a God in this film. I would say that it was missing those action one-liners, but for White, this seemed to work as a no-nonsense person who whips ass, gets paid, and moves on.
I am going to say that there needs to be a Blood and Bone 2. Have it in New York or some other city. Make it like the Expendables but better and have White still whip ass. Bring back Price and call it Price’s Revenge. No matter, you will have fun watching the fight scenes and wanting more.
