Revenge is a dish best served cold! Sometimes, revenge overtakes a person, and you must deal with them and everything they love. Revenge is usually one of the primary motivating factors in someone’s life. It is the drive that pushes them to achieve what they want. Revenge is in all aspects of life, from sports, career, family, and everything else. Blue Eye Samurai is an anime where one person in Edo Japan is on a revenge tour, and it is freaking AWESOME!

During Japan’s Edo period (17th century), Mizu is looking for some revenge against four particular white men. Mizu is looked down upon and hides her identity as she is a half-white, half-Japanese outcast who grew up with a hard life while living and taken in as an apprentice of a blind sword maker. Mizu wants revenge as one of the white men is her father, who has been chilling illegally in Japan after the Tokugawa shogunate closed the borders. After training with the sword for many years, Mizu goes on a bloody path where many will lose their lives for her vengeance. Watch out for the one with blue eyes.

Hold up! Hold up! Hold the fuck up!! Blue Eye Samurai is a fucking AWESOME anime filled with violence, a great story, the strength of a woman, and just a great anime to watch, and I can’t wait until season two comes out. Damn, this anime was great, and I couldn’t get enough of it. Congrats, Netflix, for coming through with an excellent anime. Netflix might be the new place to go to watch anime because I was blown away by this one.

First, the story is FANTASTIC! There are so many themes at play. First, the main story of revenge is at the top of the list. Mizu is looking to get revenge against four white men, with one being her father. I feel like each season will be dedicated to a particular person. In this one, Abijah Fowler, an Irish smuggler who is allied with the Shogun, is at the top of her list, and Abijah has been in hiding for over ten years. Mizu carves a bloody path to Abijah to confront him and ultimately kill him. What I love about this story is that it shows the ups and downs of Mizu’s life. She was cast aside because of her being of a mixed race and lives with a blind swords maker who teaches her the ways of crafting a sword. One day, she sees a swordsman and begins to mimic his movements. When a freakin meteor crashes into the earth, she makes a badass sword with it.

Another plot deals with Princess Akemi. Princess Akemi’s plot is the opposite, as she is a spoiled brat but also the strong-willed daughter of a lord. She is in love with Taigen but wants her own independence. She runs away from her marriage even though the dude seems cool. She works at a brothel for a little while, and her side of things is crazy.

The story shows that both women have their own paths and are treated like second-rate citizens. They don’t have control over their own destiny it seems. Mizu hides that she is a woman and covers her eyes so she is treated fairly. Princess Akemi runs off and doesn’t try to do what her father says. Yet, both women want a family. There are scenes, especially with Mizu, where she fantasizes about being in love and being with a man. The story of the man and how the woman kills for her love is fascinating because it mimics what was in her heart as she twirled those blades around.

Let’s be real; I want to talk about the action of this anime. There is plenty of it. There is violence, death, blood, guts, and everything you can imagine in each episode. I LOVE IT!! It’s not that I love violence for the violence; this violence works because, you know, people rolled around with their katana and were fighting all the time. I like how they showed Mizu with weakness but also that she was a badass. When she fought those dudes on the cliff, it was marvelous to watch. When she rolls up in the castle, she goes to town and whips so much ass. Oh, damn, just thinking about it makes me want to watch this series all over again because you will see plenty of beheadings and Mizu going up against like twenty people and coming out on top.

Let’s take a second to talk about the animation and how beautiful it is. Damn, the animation was beautiful, and I enjoyed every second watching this anime for it. The animation drew you in and was crisp and extremely appealing to the eyes. Love the subtle look of Mizu’s glasses as they looked badass. The animators need to be given mad props because I love an anime that doesn’t rely on CGI. I like hand drawings or whatever is used now. This style could be new, and I love looking at it every second.

Blue Eye Samurai is one of the best anime series of 2023 or 2024. You will be highly pleased to watch this anime. The story is amazing, the animation deserves applause, and the characters are great. The action scenes are great, but it looks like someone could pull off the moves in real life. The anime does have sex and nudity, but it definitely adds to the story. Watch this anime and wait patiently for season two.
