In honor of Black History Month, I thought it would be good to find some great quotes in film from black actors or actresses. There are a ton of great quotes to choose from but these are the ones I am feeling. I think these are the ones that are quoted and really get blackness. Give it up for Black History Months!!
“They call me Mr. Tibbs!” – Virgil Tibbs, In the Heat of the Night (1967)
SIDNEY!!!!! When you think of famous quotes by black actors in film, this quote has to be #1. The legendary Sindey Poitier plays Philadelphia detective Virgil Tibbs in the classic film In the Heat of the Night. Tibbs is a cool man who knows his stuff and when he gets roped into a case in the deep south, he investigates. During a heated moment with Police Chief Gillespie, Gillespie asks what they call Virgil and he responses with this classic line. It is powerful, strong and you are like DAMN RIGHT! BLACK POWER
“Sit yo five dolla ass down before I make change…” – Nino Brown, New Jack City (1991)
New Jack City is an awesome film that tells the tale of Nino Brown and the two cops who try to bring him to justice in New York City. Wesley Snipes brings the smooth appeal and ruthlessness as Nino Brown, a man who becomes a drug kingpin in NYC. When Nino has a meeting with his lieutenants, one of them tries to stop him and he delivers this marvelous line. A line where you say that you are going to make change from whipping that ass. Perfection!
“Hey Auntie.” – Erik “Killmonger” Stevens, Black Panther (2018)
Besides Wakanda Forever, the best quote to come out of Black Panther has to be “Hey Auntie.” When Killmonger is questioned by the council and they learn who he is, he drops this line so cool and calm. You can tell he was being sarcastic but damn was he cool. This quote made the amazing and great Angela Bassett everyone’s auntie. Now people go around and say hey auntie. Major props need to be given to Michael B. Jordan for ad lib this line. Bravo man!
