Whiplash is a film that depicts the relationship between an ambitious, young and innocent jazz drummer (Teller) and an abusive, out of his mind, perfectionist bandleader (J. K. Simmons). In this world we call this the “Not My Tempo” Slap.
Simmons character is intimidating and scary. He was all up in Teller’s face. Now what makes this slap so effective is because it is quick but has a message behind it. The one where you have the person’s FULL attention. What adds on to this slap is that Simmons’ character makes Teller’s character cry from it.
