We all love video games. They make the world go round and keep us entertained. Video game movies on the other hand can fall way flat. Resident Evil is one of those franchises that gives the gift of bad movies. Granted, if you can make money, go for it but damn, the films are like the games sometimes.
Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004)
The sequel to the already questionable video game series was greenlit and just like the zombies, it came back to life but even worse. Alice escapes the facility from the first film and tries to make it out of Raccoon City. We are even graced with Jill Valentine and the villain Nemesis. This is a true video game film as the scares leave and the actions goes from 0 to 100. Leave all expectations at the door because if you have any, they will be crushed.
Resident Evil: Extinction (2007)
Why not make a third film in this series. Long gone is the understanding of making a good film as the zombies seem to go by the way side and fighting Umbrella is one for the forefront. This time, Alice with a group of survivors, travel across the Mojave desert to try to get to safety. There are a few scenes that are awesome as in fighting in the desert but after that, it is much of the same thing that loses it appeal really quickly. Like in the games, there is a final boss who is a scientist this time around.
Resident Evil: Afterlife (2010)
This is the fourth installment of the “legendary” series but it goes far off and away from the game series. It shouldn’t even be called Resident Evil anymore. Alice returns while searching for survivors in Los Angeles but finally going up against Albert Wesker, the head of the Umbrella Corporation. The film might have been a little better but the whole Wesker fighting scene seemed off and uneventful. At least they put in a major villain in this time around.
Resident Evil: Retribution (2012)
You know what is great about the fifth installment of a film series? Usually nothing because it stops making sense after a while. This time around, Alice is captured by the Umbrella Corporation and with her making her escape from an underwater facility. Resident Evil does one thing right, they have great locations. Where this one leaves the planet is when Wesker and Alice team up at the White House for one last stand.
Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021)
Sometimes it’s best not to make another film in a series after it says “Final Chapter.” Why would you need to make another movie? Resident Evil, please stop because the Netflix show wasn’t that good anyway. This film is set in 1998 and follows a group of survivors trying to survive the zombie outbreak. Hell, this is the same as any other zombie film. You might as well watch the Walking Dead.
