There are horror movies that will scare you, and then there are horror movies that try to be horror only to be a boring, pathetic, mind-numbing piece of s**t of a film. The remake of the 1980 film Prom Night is so dull and stupid that you will lose some major brain cells while watching it. Watching this film actually made me happy that I didn’t go to my prom. I decided to do my sport rather than go to prom, where people dress up and try to be happy and do the whole prom king and queen thing. This film was a complete and utter waste of time. Why the freak do you even make a remake. Okay, sorry, I am rambling and will get back on track.
So, what was this boring movie about? Well, based on the name, it was about a magical and loving movie about a girl who is madly in love with her boyfriend. Her friends help her realize her dream of being prom queen, but another girl believes she should, and during the night, they see that true friendship is more than a crown. If you believe that statement, then you will believe anything because the film isn’t about that. Yea, it’s about prom, but It is truly about a deranged high school biology teacher named Richard Fenton who becomes widely obsessed with his teenager freshman student Donna Keppel. The dude becomes so obsessed with Donna that homeboy kills her whole family, and she witnesses him stabbing her mother in the chest. Somehow, Donna escapes, and Richard is arrested and sent to prison for life. Yayyyyy! A happy ending. Well, as with most horror movies, that doesn’t happen. Three years later, after some heavy psychological treatment and taking pills, Donna is now a senior and about to celebrate her prom. She attends with her loving boyfriend Bobby and their best friends on her prom night at the luxurious and fabulous Pacific Grad Hotel. Shit is about to hit the fan when Richard has somehow escaped from prison and has checked in the same hotel as Donna and her friends. Richard soon goes on a killing spree to make sure he can have Donna all to himself.
Okay, Prom Night is one of the most boring and predictable horror, scream fest films that I have seen. My mind was literally becoming numb throughout the whole film, and it didn’t get any better as I watched this film. First, the entire plot was blah! Okay, a teacher goes insane and kills a student’s family because he is obsessed with the girl. I have heard teachers sleeping with students but damn, man! To kill a whole family is beyond crazy, and besides the police shooting this fool, they take him to jail. Only in America. Not only that, somehow, this dude escapes and the person he preyed on Prom Night. Coincidence??? I think not!!
What makes this film even worse is how everyone dies. The crazy teacher kills a maid to get her master key and then starts killing all the girl’s friends or the ones who go up to the suite. I feel like he was in the suite most of the time, and when someone was missing, no one had a clue. What made it even worse was that there were no jump scares. Dude hid in the closet and was like, you dead. Nothing entertaining about that at all.
Also, the pettiness between some of the characters was a little over the top and not needed. Two girls being highly bitchy towards each other for the Prom Queen Crown. Yes, it is a highlight in one person’s life, but damn, it made you think how stupid and little things were in high school. It actually made me not miss high school, and glad I didn’t go to my own prom. What a great decision on my part.
For the acting, I don’t even know what to say about it. First, my homeboy Idris Elba. You get a major pass from this one. It was back in the day, and you had to start somewhere. Loved you as John Luther. Brittany Snow, I am also going to give you a pass. This movie was terrible, and your acting was meh, but hey, you did the damn thing in Pitch Perfect and after that.
I wanted to come up with a way to conclude this review, but it will be a waste of time. So, in the meantime, skip this film and look at the pictures you took at your own prom. That would probably be way better. I know it will be way better than watching this film.
