High school can be great or a pain. You have many cliques and groups within a single building. There are so many groups that it is crazy. You have the sports group, musicians, the smart ones, the popular ones, and so many others. High school was okay for me; I didn’t miss it or look at my yearbooks.

What if your school was one where people could use magic? Within those walls, people are discriminated against on whether they have high or low abilities. It is strange, but the rest of the world wants to destroy you. What happens when you are a complete outcast in your own school but seem to be able to beat everyone. The Irregular at Magic High School is an anime where one student can whip anyone’s ass.

In an alternate world, magic, which was thought to be a fairy tale, exists and has become one of modern technology. Yet, genetics determines the ability to use this new power, which greatly limits the number of magicians worldwide. After World War III, the world’s population had significantly reduced to 3 billion after twenty years. The world has now been reduced to four significant superpowers: The United States of North America (USNA), the New Soviet Union, the Great Asian Alliance, and Japan. In Japan, magic is ruled by the Ten Master Clans. Magic users are looked at as a commodity and forced into magic schools. Within Japan, nine magic high schools exist, with each one specializing in a different aspect of magic.

The Irregular at Magic High School follows the unbeatable Tatsuya Shiba. Tatsuya is the bodyguard of his sister Miyuki Shiba, who is a candidate to succeed in the leadership of the Yotsuba clan, one of the Ten Master Clans that govern Japan’s magicians. Tatsuya and Miyuki have a bizarre and almost incestuous relationship. They enroll in First High School, which segregates its students based on their magical abilities. While Miyuki is enrolled as a first-course student who is viewed as the best of the best students, Tatsuya is enrolled in the second course, which is known as beneath the first course. Tatsuya might not have the magical skills, but his technical knowledge, combat abilities, and unique magic techniques are beyond extraordinary and cause people to view him as an irregular student. As the siblings try to change the school, the outside world wants to cause another war.

Honestly, I don’t know about you, but this anime was a complete waste of time. A freakin 39 episodes, and I have never been so bored with an anime. I wish I could take back all those hours. There are many issues I have with this anime. I will get to them in a second but let’s talk about the decent.

The fighting scenes were the best parts of the whole anime. They are so far and few between that it really throws you off when they do come up. When they do come up, they are intense and make you want more. When Tatsuya fought against the two powerful students, it was awesome to watch because it pushed him. Also, when people tried to invade Japan, that was great to see because you saw some exciting stuff.

With that said, the story made somewhat sense. I got the whole thing that after WW3, the United States of North America, the New Soviet Union, the Great Asian Alliance, and Japan were the new superpowers. In the school, people are pretty much segregated for the use of their powers. When all hell breaks loose, everyone puts their prejudice aside and want to be cool with each other.

There seemed to be some boring drama in this anime, like the main character. There was no craziness or over-the-top dramatics as you would get with some other high school anime series. Someone had a crush on someone, and the person blushed and moved on. I was in high school, and it wasn’t this bad or boring.

Then we come to the main characters, Tatsuya Shiba and Miyuki Shiba. I don’t know about you, but someone needs to check on these two. Even though they are siblings, they had to practice in some incest. Watching these two be all lovey-dovey with each other was a major shutdown for me. This isn’t porn where this incest stuff happens. It was like every episode, and it was freakin creepy as hell to watch it.

On top of the creepy incest stuff, both Tatsuya and Miyuki were OP. Tatsuya was probably the most OP of them all. Dude would never lose from his combat ability and his genius. Oh damn, I broke three ribs, my leg, and I have a punctured lung. I got it; I will rewrite my body and return to fix everything. It might mess with me mentally, but I must win. It made it seem that homeboy should’ve never been in high school, but he was. Then we have Miyuki, who would give this sweet, innocent look, but she is considered one of the strongest magicians in the world and is a candidate to succeed her Aunt Maya as the leader of the Yotsuba Clan. Why do people even try to compete? It brought this anime way down.

The animation was okay. When the characters used their powers, it was visually stimulating, but after that, it was meh. It never really wowed you after that. Most people would say it was great, but after watching a ton of anime, the animation is nothing to get excited about.

I am going to keep it real with you. The Irregular at Magic High School is an anime that can be put to the wayside. Does it have its moments? Yes, it does. Besides that, it really falls off with the overpowered main character and the incest stuff. I would say skip this long-ass anime and move on to something better.
