“Yeah. Can you feel it, baby? I can too.” Mark Wahlberg went from Calvin Klein underwear poster boy to making a number 1 hit song in Good Vibrations to worldwide movie star. Oh, and let’s not forget producing shows like Entourage and Ballers. Wahlberg has done it all in his career. One thing that Wahlberg does is stay in excellent shape. Even at the age of 50, homeboy still goes hard in gym.
Good Vibrations- Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch (1991)
I know Mark Wahlberg will probably be angry because he hates this song, but it is #1 in my world. How can you not start off with Good Vibrations by Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch? This is my go-to bicep song. Mark Wahlberg has on his black cap no shirt and rapping. How can you not love that? In the words of the great Marky Mark, “Yo, it’s about that time, To bring forth the rhythm and the rhyme.”
Eddie Adams/Dirk Diggler- Boogie Nights (1997)
The movie that was a coming out film for Mark Wahlberg. This film helped established himself as a film actor. Wahlberg, takes the role of Eddie and runs with it. Sometimes he is over the top with his acting but it is believable for his character. The scene when his mother throws him out is pretty hilarious. That was one scene where I was like, “a little over dramatic there man. Stop doing that sad man run.” Overall Wahlberg does a good job with the Eddie. Turning the character from a naive dishwasher to an international porn star.
Staff Sergeant Sean Dignam- The Departed (2006)
Mark Wahlberg stood out as Staff Sergeant Sean Dignam. Wahlberg DOMINATED this role and seemed to be in his element. Some of the lines he gave were priceless and seemed to just come out of his mouth naturally. The film should’ve had a lot more of him in it. He was nominated for an Academy Award for this role, and it seemed like he was hardly in it but sure as hell made an impression.
Micky Ward- The Fighter (2010)
Walhberg is the star of the film but he also has the weakest performance among his co-stars. I don’t want to say that I wasn’t impressed with his performance but it was meh in my eyes. Wahlberg was overshadowed by the others in the film. It honestly just felt like the same performance that Wahlberg always does. Was he entertaining? Yes. Was he Academy Award nomination worthy like the rest of the cast? Nope. It’s sad because I like Mark Wahlberg. I follow him and he motivates me to get fit. It’s not like he is not a talented actor, the dude puts in the work when it’s a physical demanding role like this one and boxing.
Captain Leo Davidson- Planet of the Apes (2001)
When the reboot of Planet of the Apes came out, I was excited. Yep, I was excited because I liked the original and thought this one would be decent. Mark Wahlberg didn’t seem like an awful choice to play the lead and it was directed by Tim Burton. With Burton, you knew it was going to be crazy and a little creepy as most his movies are. Well, the movie was meh and made no sense. Also, Wahlberg seemed to be a far distant in this role while mostly running around. Not the best role but you do get to see some great make-up.
David McCall- Fear (1996)
Back when Wahlberg was a baby face actor during his third role, I believe. Mahlberg plays the villain in this role as David McCall who has good looks, charm and manages to star dating another baby face in Reese Witherspoon, who plays Nicole. Think of the teen version of Fatal Attraction. Wahlberg is a straight up obsessed, possessive and jealous person over Nicole. Dude beats up anyone and is just insane.
John Bennett- Ted (2012)
Who would’ve thought that Wahlberg and a stuffed teddy bear that becomes magical would be an entertaining movie? I remember seeing Ted in the theaters and thought it was hilarious and stupid all at the same time. You know what? Wahlberg played John so well. I wasn’t expecting it but he pulled it off. The whole fight scene was hilarious and some of the scenes will make you go, “WTF did I just see?” It’s a freakin teddy bear!!
Detective Terry Hoitz- The Other Guys (2010)
In another film where Wahlberg shows his comedic chops. He is hilarious as Detective Terry Hoitz. The reason is his personality is completely different from Will Farrell. Wahlberg is the serious type who wants to make an impression. He gets easily frustrated while Farrell character is so stoic and calm. The best scene is when Terry tries to get his girl back and does ballet to impress her. I have to give it up to Wahlberg, he is funny and entertaining.
Sergeant First Class Troy Barlow- Three Kings (1999)
In a film that starred Geroge Clooney, Ice Cube and Wahlberg, the film was a surprise hit that was both entertaining and a screwball comedy. The film revolves around four U.S. soldiers who go on a gold heist during the 1991 uprisings in Iraq against Saddam Hussein following the end of the Gulf War. Wahlberg played an office worker with a wife and baby daughter at home. Wahlberg is funny as one of the three men who just wants to get back home to his family.
Elliot Moore- The Happening (2008)
We can call this the movie where Wahlberg talks to a plant. In M. Night Shyamalan’s strange movie where a natural disaster causes mass suicides, Wahlberg plays a high school science teacher who is caught in this worldwide phenomenon. Wahlberg is all over the place with telling a group of people to stay in front of wind along with talking to a plant because he doesn’t want to die. Once again, a very strange film.
