Welsey Snipes is an actor and martial arts who has whipped ass in most of his films. Snipes has been in the entertainment game for more than thirty years and has almost done it all from thrillers, dramatic, comedies and action flicks. He started his film career in the film Major League before gaining full appreciation for his role as Drug Lord Nino Brown. Snipes doesn’t get as much love as he should. Starring as Blade is the OG film for the Marvel Universe. Snipes biggest influence is his martial arts as he helped bring more black actors into action roles. Let’s give honor to the one and only Wesley Snipes because “There’s been only one Blade! There’s only ever gonna be one Blade!”
Eric Brooks/Blade- Blade franchise (1998-Present)
“There’s been only one Blade! There’s only ever gonna be one Blade!” Wesley Snipes brought the Marvel superhero to the big screen. Appearing four times as the Day Walker, Snipes was AWESOME! The first Blade was great, the second went to a new level. The third was meh but making a surprise cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine was completely worth it after 20 years. Snipes even broke a world record for this role. He is still the only Blade we know and love.
Nino Brown- New Jack City (1991)
Snipes was ICONIC in his role as the drug dealer, Nino Brown. As the boss of Cash Money Brothers gang. Snipes played Brown as the ruthless drug lord who took over a complex and sold drugs to his community. Snipes was fun to watch as he had the style, charm and ruthlessness this character needed to be. This film was Snipes big break and if you don’t like it, you better sit yo five-dollar ass down before he makes chain.
John Cutter- Passenger 57 (1992)
If you have never seen Passenger 57, you are missing out. Snipes stars as John Cutter, a security expert who can whip ass and take names. The film is action-packed and one that made Snipes into an action star. Snipes is funny, charismatic, cool and complete badass in this film. Snipes also dropped one of the best movie lines, “Always bet on black.” You damn right you bet on black.
Simon Phoenix- Demolition Man (1993)
I think this is one of Snipes best roles. Snipes plays Simon Phoenix, a psychopathic, insane badass criminal who is unfrozen in the future. He straight up does damage and chaos in the world that has no touch or is like Care Bear society. Snipes is over the top, hilarious and seems to be having the most fun as his character. He is the opposite of Sylvester Stallone’s character, and it works perfectly. Simon says……
Willie Mays Hayes- Major League (1989)
In one of Snipes earlier roles and one that many baseball fans love to watch, Snipes plays Willie Mays Hayes (no relation to Willie Mays but nice name). As Hayes, he arrives at spring training looking fly but uninvited. After impressing everyone with his speed, we learn that he can’t hit a ball to save his life. Snipes is funny as the flashy player who has a goal of stealing 100 bases. Snipes is funny but wished he got a little more screen time.
Sidney Deane- White Men Can’t Jump (1992)
Wesley Snipes teamed up with Woody Harrelson in this funny and great basketball film. Snipes plays Sidney a cocky, arrogant, trash-talking street baller who loses to Billy twice before teaming up. This is one film where stereotypes are in full force, but the pairing is fun to watch. Things get crazy when love and greed come into conflict with each other. This film also showed that Snipes can be that funny person on the screen and not rely on his action star performances.
Noxeema Jackson- To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar (1995)
To be a great actor, I think you have to take risks. In one of his most surprising roles, Snipes plays Noxeema Jackson, a drag queen from New York City who goes on a road trip with his two friends played by Patrick Swayze, and John Leguizamo. Snipes is known for being an action star but to switch up the game and star in this film was surprising. Snipes is great in his role and plays off his costars. You have to applaud Snipes for this role and how he performed.
D’Urville Martin- Dolemite Is My Name (2019)
Snipes has been known as an action star, but he went to a dramatic role as the years caught up with him. In a supporting role in the funny Dolemite Is My Name, Snipes is at his best and one of his funniest to date. Even though Eddie Murphy is the star, playing the controversial Rudy Ray Moore and his quest to finish his movie Dolomite. Snipes plays D’urville Martin, the unwilling director. Snipes his hilarious with his expressions as he always seems disgusted by Moore’s kung-fu skills and overall lack of filmmaking. When Snipes is on the screen you are quickly drawn to him because just like the rest of us, he knows the acting is bad.
Monroe “Undisputed” Hutchens – Undisputed (2002)
Many people didn’t like this film, but I thought it was one of Snipes best works. You get a prison movie where the heavyweight champion in boxing goes to prison, and he fights the prison’s undisputed boxing champion. Snipes doesn’t say much in the film as he lets Rhames do all the talking. Snipes plays Hutchens who has been the prison champion for 10 years. Like I said he doesn’t say much but you do want him to shut Chambers up. This is one role where Snipes was an actor rather than a action star.
Officer John Robinson – Money Train (1995)
Snipes and Harrelson once again team up in this buddy cop film. They play foster brothers John and Charlie Robinson who are transit cops in the mean streets of NYC Subway. Snipes shows his range with being serious and funny during the film. Him and Harrelson have great chemistry as they seemed to play off each other while trying to keep their jobs, steal from the money train and hook up with Jeniffer Lopez character.
