WHOOPI!!!!! Whoopi Goldberg has been in the entertainment industry for a long time and has accomplished so much. Actually, she is one of 17 entertainers to win the illustrious EGOT, where a person has won an Emmy Award, a Grammy Award, an Academy Award (“Oscar”), and a Tony Award. You go, Whoopi! Whoopi’s breakthrough came from the Spielberg film, The Color Purple. She really hit new heights when he stared as the funny psychic in Ghost. When not starring in films, Whoopi is the co-host of the View. Whoopi has done it all and is an idol and role model for many people.
Shenzi- The Lion King (1994)
Mufasa! Say it again! Goldberg is hilarious and great as one of Scar’s three spotted hyenas. Besides Timon and Pumbaa, the hyenas have some of the funniest lines. Goldberg provides the voice of the leader of the hyena clan. This is one of the roles Goldberg will be remember and iconized for years to come.
Celie Harris Johnson- The Color Purple (1985)
I read the book and Goldberg is OUTSTANDING as Celie in the Spielberg directed film. This film and role were Goldberg’s breakthrough and one of her first feature debut. Goldberg truly embodied Celie emotions, thoughts, love and pain. A woman who is beat down and, in the end, finds her voice to stand on her own two feet.
Oda Mae Brown- Ghost (1990)
The film where Goldberg won her Academy Award. She was the best parts of the WHOLE movie. Goldberg was funny, entertaining, and a joy to watch. Some of her best parts are after she finds outs she can speak to ghosts. She is sitting in her office, surrounded by a variety of other spirits. One possesses her, and the way she asks the woman about her hair is funny. Another scene is when Oda Mae goes with Sam to take the money that Carol needs. She is pure joy in that whole act, and then when she had to give the dough up to a couple of nuns, her reaction is priceless because we all had that reaction.
Deloris Van Cartier/Sister Mary Clarence- Sister Act (1992)
This is the first movie I ever saw Whoopi Goldberg in. It was during a party, and I went to the movies to watch this film. Goldberg is hilarious but also inspiring as a lounge singer forced to join a convent after being placed in a witness protection program. When she was in charge of a choir, she brought excitement to the group, and you have to love Goldberg smile.
Guinan- Star Trek: The Next Generation (1988-1993)
When you can be part of the Star Trek series, you take that chance. As Guinan, the character is an alien who is several hundred years old. Goldberg plays her beautifully as she is known for her warmth and wisdom. Goldberg seems to be so calm and in her element. Always helping the crew when they are in need.
Co-Host- The View (2007-Present)
Goldberg became one of the co-hosts for the View in 2007. In August 2009, Walters, Behar, Hasselbeck, Goldberg, and Shepherd won the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Talk Show Host. The show has been around, and Goldberg is a force on the show who tries to do her best.
Valerie Owens- Girl, Interrupted (1999)
Even though she is not the star of the film, Goldberg is a subtle and sometimes strong presence in this film. She plays Valerie, one of the R.N. of the facility. She isn’t the hard, evil type like Nurse Ratched. She truly wants to help her girls and if she needs to, she has no fear of scolding them. Case in point is when he through Ryder’s character in the tub and told her to get her shit together.
Clara Mayfield- Clara’s Heart (1988)
Even though the movie was panned for not being that interesting, Goldberg’s performance was the one that stood out the most and carried this film. Without Goldberg, this film would probably be one of the all-time worst films list. Goldberg plays a housekeeper who brings a family together.
Herself-Whoopi Goldberg: Original Broadway Show Recording (1986)
Whoopi beat out the heavy competition to start her quest to being an EGOT. It is only right to put on this list her Grammy win since she is one of only 17 people ever to be an EGOT. When Goldberg did her Broadway show and her star being on the rise, she showed the world her incredible talents.
Producer-Thoroughly Modern Millie (2002)
The story is about a small-town girl named Millie Dillmount, who rolls up into New York City to marry for money instead of love. The reason this is on Goldberg’s list is because this is where she won the Tony for. Goldberg was a producer, and we have to add it to the list because this got her to EGOT status.
