Let’s talk about an evil son of a bitch. The one and only, evil slave owner, Calvin J. Candie played by the great Leonardo DiCaprio from Django Unchained. You want to talk about a man that seems to represent slavery and the South all together, look no further than Calvin Candie. Calvin is a man with a southern drawl, Cheshire Cat smile and an intense feeling of trying to sound French when he is not.
Calvin’s name and plantation is notorious throughout the state of Mississippi as it is the fourth largest cotton plantation and is called Candyland. Freakin’ Candyland! Ain’t no sugar and treats at this place. Even Django said Candyland isn’t a place for slaves to go.
When Calvin first comes on the screen, you knew he was a man you shouldn’t like. He forces his male slaves into brutal wrestling matches called Mandingo fights. Dude even spoke business to Schultz and told his slaves to keep fighting. If a slave loses, then they would die. Calvin absolutely loves watching Mandingo fight. When it comes to his beautiful female slaves, he prostitutes them off in the brothel he owns called the Cleopatra Club. Calvin is a cruel bastard to say in somewhat nice terms. If you are a slave and he sees no use for you, dude will turn the dogs and have them eat on the flesh of them.
As the personality goes for this fool, he seems to hit all those southern slave owner stereotypes. Dude is a sadistic racist who believes the white man is above all. The dude loves to use the N-word as he said it 152 times in the whole movie. Also seems to have a might liking to his sister. Just nasty. Yet, Calvin is not the brightest light bulb in the bunch. He speaks nonsense and doesn’t even know that his favorite writer, Alexandre Dumas, was black. Don’t make him look like a fool because he has an extreme temper and will seek a way to show off that he is better.
