There have been many villains throughout the ages. Back in the late 80s, one villain came to the forefront and changed the game. That villain is none other than Hans Gruber. Gruber changed the way villains were presented from being one-dimensional to being complex and completely in control. Gruber was the villain that made you want to root for villains. Gruber was the first that started a wave of European Villains who had a new ideology and based everything on political gains rather than getting that bag. Gruber came to life thanks to the legendary performance of Alan Rickman. This was Rickman’s breakthrough role, and he dominated it by having this character ranked in the top lists of greatest villains ever. The villain might have the greatest death scene for a villain of all time.
Hans is a man you shouldn’t mess with. He is a former German terrorist leader who decides to take over a Los Angeles skyscraper on Christmas. You know you are an evil person when you are robbing and killing people on Christmas. Hans was part of the Volksfrei West German terrorist group but was kicked out for being too radical. Think about that! This dude was so radical that his comrades were like, “you got to go. You too much for us.” He takes over the Nakatomi Corporation building to negotiate freeing the hostages only to have another goal in mind.
Hans is a brilliant mastermind. With his brilliance, Hans is ruthless but is one of the calmest men you could meet. He seems to be in complete control over the situation and hardly loses his temper. He is extremely intelligent, but this is a downside as he likes to boast about how intelligent he is. He brags about the education he has with particular knowledge in business and finance. Hans doesn’t have an ounce of remorse in his body when he kills someone and acts as if it is an everyday thing. Where did you grow up to think that. Hans also have a dry, dark sense of humor shown at the end of the film. Hans has a great ability of switching his persona from casual to straight-up intimidating in a blink of an eye to surprise people.
Han Gruber is one of the best movie villains to grace the screen and it is thanks to the acclaimed performance of Alan Rickman. Hans is such a great villain that many other villains mention him in other films. That is a boss level of evil right there. Many will say he is a Christmas villain. Maybe he is and maybe he is not. One thing is for sure, he has one of the most iconic death scenes and set a new tone for how movie villains are portrayed.
