We have all been angry at our parents at one point in our lives. Most of the time it is mama who we are angry at. She is the nurturing, loving one. We probably have said some hurtful things to her. What would happen if there was a mother out there looking at your sadness, ready to strike and take you away. Show you how great life can be only to trap you in her world and take your soul. The Beldam or Other Mother is an evil villain from the novel and film Coraline. The Other Mother is a powerful, malevolent witch who is ruler of the Other World and lures children to take their souls. Once inside her world, she sews buttons in their eyes and eats their flesh. Let me introduce you to your Other Mother.
The Beldam aka Other Mother appearance changes throughout the film. Think of her disguise like Pennywise. She disguises herself as a sweet, kind version of the child’s mother to have them drop their guard and come to her world. In the film, Coraline, she appears as Coraline’s mother with a variety of differences. No matter what appearance she has, she always has two shiny, black buttons sewn into her head as eyes.
When Coraline tells Other Mother to drop the act, her appearance changes. Her body becomes elongated making her look skinnier and taller but her back seems to hump. Her hair also becomes longer and shinier. First, homegirl looks like she needs a sandwich and secondly, what type of shampoo do you be using because gurl, your hair be looking fresh.
I want to say that Other Mother is like Frieza from DBZ. Homegirl has a ton of transformations. Her true form is quite terrifying. She is a cross between a skeleton and a spider. BLAH! Must have taken notes from Pennywise. She becomes this lanky ass, skinny, skeleton looking creature that wears a grey dress and has four freaky looking legs. She is creepy looking.
You will think that Other Mother has a nice, sweet personality but she is straight up manipulative. While looking through her doll’s eyes to see that kids are not happy. She slivers in like a snake. When she is disguised as her victim’s mom, she appears as a loving, caring, sweet, motherly person for the sadden children. She speaks like an old-fashioned person who maintains traditional family values. Yet, she is very observant of the problems her victim’s have in the real world. Through her observations, she recreates the Other World to the liking of her prey.
In the Other World, Other Mother controls the world with an iron fist and has full authority of it. Her creations are obedient to her will. She is highly cruel and twisted with a major sadistic nature. She doesn’t mind torturing her creations. Other Mother is extremely intelligent and uses different wordplay to disguise her motives.
Other Mother is not a mother I would like to have. I am completely good with my mom and love her dearly. Other Mother is a being that has more forms than Frieza in DBZ and is straight up evil. Taking little kid’s souls. What is up with witches and taking little kids? When a creepy doll is looking at you and you end up in a new world, just bounce and give your real mom a big hug.
