Alexandra Daddario, in my opinion, is one of the most BEAUTIFUL women in the world. She has the most fantastic smile, perfect blue eyes and is a very talented actress. Homegirl knows how to act. Love you in Percy Jackson. Keep doing your thing and do the roles you want to do because I’ll watch them no matter what. Now, this doesn’t mean that she hasn’t had any bad movies. All actors and actresses have terrible movies. We Summon the Darkness is one of those movies that I really didn’t like and thought it was an utter rip-off of another film but just a little darker.
We Summon the Darkness was directed by Marc Meyers and written by Alan Trezza. The film starts off in Indiana, July 1988, when Alexis Butler (Daddario) and her two friends Val (Hasson) and Bev (Forsyth), embark on a road trip to a heavy metal show. They stop for gas, and while in the store, the clerk is watching a religious priest talk about sins. The usual God is not happy and repent your sins type stuff. After buying their stuff and hitting the road once again, a blue van passes them and throws a freakin’ milkshake onto their windshield. Who does that? Once they arrive at the concert, they find the same blue van, and Val throws a small firecracker into it, causing the three boys inside to climb out. The three girls meet Ivan (Swift) and his two buddies Kovacs (Miller) and Mark (Johnson). The guys are immediately smitten by the girls and decide to rock out with them. After the show, Alexis invites the boys to her father’s empty mansion. Bev and Mark seem to like each other, yet Bev seems to almost avoid him. During the night, they decide to play the game Never Have I Ever. Things seem fine when everything suddenly takes a turn for the worse. The girls plan to murder the boys and make it look like a Satanic cult killing as they are part of a church that wants to save the world by killing people and spreading the word of God. Who shall die in this world of summoning the darkness?
Not going to lie, but this film to me was a complete and utter rip-off of the Netflix original movie, “The Babysitter.” The whole premise around a group of friends doing some satanic cult stuff just reminded me of that entire movie. The only difference was that The Babysitter was funny and entertaining. We Summon the Darkness was dark but not extremely creepy. I feel like this plot has been played out so many times that it is a bore. It seems like now the only way to convince people of the world’s wrongs is to stage cult-like killings. This idea has run its course, and yet, this isn’t the last film to present it.
The whole pacing and feel of it were entirely off, as some scenes just made you scratch your head because they were so out of place. The entire Susan scene was just a waste of time. We find out that Susan is Alexis’s soon-to-be ex-stepmother. She comes home to retrieve her passport, gets some money and cocaine before skipping town. She reveals that she called the police because she saw the strange blue van and the house lights on. Okay, if you are doing cocaine before skipping town, why the hell would you call the police if you plan on not being there when they arrive.
My first question is, how the hell did you kill the first eighteen people. I think it would’ve been interesting to see how this whole thing got started. When the first person died, they seemed shocked and surprised, and it didn’t make sense. I guess you should be used to watching someone die after you’ve done it after eighteen times.
Also, there is that one friend that has a nervous breakdown and sees the light. They try to save the people that are about to be killed. Happens in every movie. That one person goes, this isn’t right, and this shouldn’t be done. Over half the film is dedicated to one friend trying to save the two boys from being killed. We have two girls trying to kill the boys. Somehow, two boys escape, and they try to survive while locked in a pantry. Like always, we have a cop that comes and doesn’t listen to anyone and always ends up dead. There is a twist at the end that doesn’t even make that much sense. It is just a repetitive movie that I have seen.
As far as the acting goes, it is not earth-shattering, but my homegirl, Alexandra Daddario, as Alexis Butler was actually entertaining. It was those beautiful blue eyes. Actually, her performance was the highlight of this whole film. She was that crazy beautiful that stopped at nothing to accomplish her goal. She was that crazy beautiful that you want to mess around with. Maddie Hasson as Val was also a highlight as the spunky blonde that is all on board with Alexis’ plans. She is that loyal best friend who thinks she is doing right no matter what. Amy Forsyth, as Beverly, is the typical teen girl who is caught up in this situation because she couldn’t find a place or identity for herself.
We Summon the Darkness is one of those horror slasher films that has been played out over and over again. The storyline is okay but not great. If you have seen one satanic cult film, you will start to see similarities between all of them. Alexandra Daddario is okay in this film, but she is beautiful to look at. Also, there is Johnny Knoxville, who has a major vampire look going on. You can watch or skip this film.
