How was your grandfather in your life? Did they teach you anything? My grandfather was one of the biggest influences in my life. He taught me so much in my life and was a great and gentle soul. I am happy, proud, and lucky to have a grandfather like him. Wise Man’s Grandchild is a tale of a powerful Sage who adopts a child who becomes one of the strongest magic users in the world.
Overview
A young salaryman who died in an accident by walking in front of a train or something is reborn in another world filled with magic and demons. In the grand kingdom of Earlshide, Merlin Wolford is regarded as a national legend, hailed for his power and adventures as a Sage. After his retirement, Merlin decides to escape from the fame and live a quiet life in the rural woods.
One day, Merlin finds a baby in the woods, decides to raise the baby as his own, and names him Shin. Shin has retained all his past memories. With this knowledge and as the years pass, Shin displays incredible talent in everything ranging from magic casting, martial arts, and everything else. Shin is a major anomaly in the world. On his 15th birthday, it soon becomes apparent that Shin excels at all things but common sense and extreme social awkwardness. To the surprise of many high-ranking people, Shin enrolls in the kingdom’s Magic Academy to hone his skills and mature among other teenagers. Wise Man’s Grandchild follows Shin’s high school life and his new friends and adventures.
Review:
Before Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation, this anime came out. When watching it, I thought for sure this anime ripped off Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation and made it a funnier version of it. Well, this anime came out first. Now is it as good and intense as Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation? No, but the anime has great moments and will make you laugh.
The concept of this anime is straightforward: a man gets killed and is reincarnated in a baby’s body but keeps all his memories. The one thing that is crazy is the man seemed to have extreme knowledge of physics and science. This showed when Shin started growing up and could take on full fledge demons by the age of 5 or 10. Shin actually passes his grandparents quite early on in age. His grandparents are the world’s greatest and legendary sages ever to walk the earth.
The story goes on to show Shin going off to a magical school. What is even crazier is that Shin’s grandfather, Merlin, taught him everything but common sense and how not to be awkward. The scenes at the magical school are both funny and entertaining. Shin is so strong that he soon becomes the strongest person in the kingdom after one fight. How does he do this? Because of his supporting family. Shin has no idea that Merlin’s friends are the king of the kingdom, legendary swordsman, and high-ranking bodyguards. All this throws his schoolmates for a loop because he has been trained by the best.
The season primarily serves two purposes. The first one is the friendships Shin makes. He is surrounded by beautiful girls and falls in love with one of them. He teaches them the art of spell-making, and they become strong. Getting his friends to his level is a challenge, but soon they become strong. The second purpose is to show how the enemy is being developed. Shin and the kingdom fight against a demon who retains their thoughts. These are where the battle scenes come into play. They are intense but really over the top. When Shin uses the sun as a weapon, it goes way overboard.
Where this anime excels is with comedy and animation. The animation is bright colors and gives the feeling that this is a fun anime. What the animation does, is that it shows the characters with strange or comedic expressions on their faces when they are terrified or laughing over the top. The comedy will make you chuckle from time to time. Some characters end up in compromising positions, while battles will put a smile on your face as a character’s hair will become all puffy. This anime showed that it shouldn’t be taken seriously and that one should have a good time with it.
As far as characters go, there are many of them. Too many to talk about all of them. Here are a few that stand out. Shin Wolford is the main character. He was a Japanese salaryman who worked for a science textbook publisher in his past life. He was by a truck and reborn into another world with his memories intact. In this new world which was full of magic, he was raised and trained by Merlin Wolford, Melida Bowen, and Michel Collins, thereby making his magical and combat skills beyond S-rank. Shin is considered a genius in the world, but his social skills are severely lacking. Sizilien “Sicily” von Claude is the love interest of Shin. She is a beautiful, timid, soft-spoken blue-haired girl. She becomes attracted to Shin when he saves her and Maria from a group of men who are harassing her. She was betrothed to a heartless person but then becomes engaged to Shin. It’s a crazy tale.
The final two that should be mentioned are Merlin Wolford and Melida Bowen. Merlin is the Wise Man and adopted grandfather of Shin. He was a hero back in the day whose magic and skills are considered legendary, especially when he and Melida (whom he was married to at the time) slew the Demonoid king. Melida is the Great Guru and ex-wife to Merlin. Melida helped raise Shin and taught him the skill of gear creation, being one of the greatest creators of all time. She is the stern one out of everyone and has no shame in telling off everyone. What is funny about these two is that no matter where they go, rabid fans always welcome them.
Wise Man’s Grandchild is a fun anime to watch that will give you some entertainment. You will chuckle at some scenes, and other scenes might leave you confused. The characters and animation in this anime are some of the strongest points. The story does lack, but if it had another season, it could probably fill in some of those gaps.
