Oh, 1975, a time when the movie game changed forever. A lot of great films were released in this year but one changed the way when movie was released. It was the year when the term Summer Blockbuster came to fruition. A time when Jack Nicholson showed you how things rolled inside a mental institution along with Dr. Frank-N-Furter showing the world how one makes a sexual monster. There are many things to love about 1975 in film.
Jaws

We all know the music and what lies beneath the calm surface of the water. Steven Spielberg’s Jaws has had a bigger impact and scared the living crap out of people than most movies. Few movies can stand the test of time, and this movie still outdoes itself. This movie is not only a classic but an all-time great! Jaws is considered the pioneer and first-ever summer blockbuster that revolutionized the movie industry. All those movies that come out during the summer, better thank Jaws for doing oh so well. This was Spielberg’s first big hit and set him off on a world of movie greatest.
One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is only one of three movies, yes, only three movies, to win the “Big Five” Academy Awards. Jack Nicholson is an absolute BEAST in this film. A story where Randle Patrick “Mac” McMurphy gets transferred for evaluation from a prison farm to a mental institution and butts heads with Nurse Mildred Ratched. The story and acting are fantastic. Louise Fletcher must also be praised for playing the hardnosed nurse who rules with an iron fist. A must watch film.
Monty Python and the Holy Grail

One of the greatest comedies ever made and a true British comedy, this film is a hilarious, silly and fun movie to watch. Who can forget one of the greatest quotes, “Tis but a scratch.” This was Monty Python’s second film and first feature length film; it tells the story of King Arthur and his quest. It is a great parody of the king’s legend. The opening credits are iconic and hilarious. You will love the black knight and here are some trivia facts. When you hear the sound of horse hooves, they are actually coconuts being banged together.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show

“Let’s do the Timewarp again!” One of the best Halloween and musical films made, this musical is funny, insane and fun to watch. I remember watching this long ago as my mom first showed me it and said it was a crazy film. A film dedicated to science fiction and horror stars the fantastic Tim Curry in his debut film along with a young and beautiful Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick. A story where a young couple’s car breaks down and they have to seek shelter in a castle where strange things happen and they meet the eccentric Dr. Frank-N-Furter who is a mad scientist and alien transitive. The music in this film is fun and you will sing along to many of them.
The Man Who Would Be King

If you are looking for a great adventure film, then look no further than The Man Who Would Be King. An adventure film after Rudyard Kipling’s 1888 novel. It stars movie legends such as Sean Connery, Michael Caine, Saeed Jaffrey and Christopher Plummer. The film follows two rogue ex-soldiers by the name of Daniel Dravot and Peachy Carnehan who dip out of the British Army in search of adventure. They come upon a land where Dravot is believed to be a god and made king. This is one of the best films of the year and should’ve won some major awards.
Dog Day Afternoon

“Attica! Attica! Attica!” This film must be on the list of great films of the year. A film that shows the superb acting of Al Pacino, it is a film of inexperienced criminal Sonny Wortzik who leads a bank robbery in Brooklyn only for things to go to shit and a hostage situation erupts. The film shows the media circus that ensues and the arrival of the FBI that only adds to the tension. The film is a great mixture of intensity with laughter moments sprinkled in. This is a must-watch film as you will be on the edge of your seat as the film progresses.
Escape to Witch Mountain

Before Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson brought kids to Witch Mountain, there was an original film that was fun to watch. The original showcased two youngins by the name of Tia and Tony who have extraordinary powers. While Lucas poses as their uncle, they want to escape to witch mountain to discover who they are. This is a fun and thrilling film that is great for kids to watch. Watch this one as it is the best before watching the remake.
Cooley High

This film was a great and influential film for the black community for film. A film that follows two high school seniors as one wants to be writer and the other a basketball star in this tragic tale. This film showed the dreams of black youth but also the tragedies from the inner city. This film set up other film such as Boyz n the Hood. This is a must watch for anyone and one of the best films of the year. Black art is definitely on display here.
The Passenger

If you are looking for a great drama film starring the great Jack Nicholson, then look no further than this film. Nicholson plays David Locke, a pissed off journalist in Chad who wants his big break. Dude assumes the identity of a dead businessman unaware that the person was a major arms dealer who was supplying weapons in the civil war. If you can keep up with the pace and pay attention, you will find this film entertaining and thrilling.
Tommy

I am adding this film because I watched it with my mom and remember how crazy it was. A film based on the Who’s rock album Tommy, this film was insane. It was about a psychosomatically deaf, mute, and blind boy who becomes a pinball champion and religious leader. Yup, you read that right. This film has all the big stars from back in the day such as Oliver Reed, Ann-Margret, Elton John, Eric Clapton, Jack Nicholson, Robert Powell and Tina Turner. It has been years since I’ve seen this film but I might have to watch it again.
