Ohhhhhhhh, 1994!! You were a difficult year to pick my top films of the year. You had me stressin’ and sweatin’ pretty hard because you had so many great and iconic films. We gained one of the most iconic lion father’s, it was Jim Carrey’s year, made you not want to get on a bus, we wondered what was in a briefcase and Gary Oldman had the greatest villains role ever. Here’s to the greatest of 1994
The Lion King

One of the top three Disney animated films ever made. The Lion King is the shit and one of the best films ever made, with a stellar voice cast, fantastic music, and a story that might make you cry. The Lion King continued the Disney Renaissance with a stellar box office. Its worldwide gross was around $763 million, making it the highest-grossing film of 1994. The story is great, the music is outstanding, and the voice acting is perfect. Miss you James Earl Jones. You can play this movie repeatedly and not get tired.
Speed

Speed is freakin AWESOME! The film stars Keanu Reeves, Dennis Hopper, and Sandra Bullock. This film is intense and will keep you on the edge of your seat. When a city bus is triggered to explode if it goes under 50 mph, shit gets real. Reeves plays as an LAPD cop who manages to get on the bus that is terrorized by a vengeful extortionist, played by Hopper. This movie has everything from explosions, intensity to everything else. This film put Reeves in another stratosphere.
The Shawshank Redemption

The Shawshank Redemption is one of the best films of the year and probably decade. When it was first reviewed, many critics were meh on it. A film that tells the story of Andy Dufresne, played by Tim Robbins, a banker who is sentenced to life in Shawshank for killing his adulterous wife and her lover even though he claims he is innocent. In prison, he meets and becomes friends with Red, played by Morgan Freeman. This film showed the hardships of prison and the belief that you are innocent while looking for any type of hope and freedom. Robbins and Freeman are excellent in this film. This is a must watch movie.
Pulp Fiction

This film is Quentin Tarantino’s masterpiece. Having four stories intertwined around crime and violence, it is the best. Tarantino knows how to tell a story that is out of order but makes sense in the end. Samuel L. Jackson came in like a bullet with his performance as Jules and the famous verse from the Book of Ezekiel. The story is excellent and will keep you engaged. The style of this film was innovative and impressive. The cast was phenomenal and everything about it should be applauded.
The Mask

1994 was a HUGE year for Jim Carrey. It was a toss up between this film, Ace Venture or Dumb & Dumber. I had to go with the Mask. Carrey plays Stanley, a boring man who one day finds an enchanted mask and transforms into a wild, insane and crazy, green-faced person. This film is wild and fun. It has so many great moments and was the first film for Cameron Diaz. I need to watch this film again because it has been a good while.
Léon: The Professional

This film is one movie with some of the BEST over the top acting in the world. The only reason I watch this film is because of the performance of Gary Oldman. This film right here made me a BIG fan of Gary Oldman. This was the film that made me start rooting for the villains. Leon: The Professional might not be for everyone, but damnit, it is a great ass action/drama film. The violence might be a lot for some people, but it doesn’t overshadow the story. The story of a little girl whose family is murdered by a corrupt cop and who seeks shelter with a hitman is one to watch. Bring…….EVERYONE!!!
Stargate

Most people didn’t like Stargate, but this film is freaking amazing. The story revolves around a “Stargate”, an ancient ring-shaped portal device that makes a wormhole. Starring Kurt Russell and James Spader, it gives a story of aliens’ influence on human civilization. The special effects are awesome, and the action scenes are right up my alley. Plus, this film started one of the best sci-fi television franchises.
Forrest Gump

“Mama always said life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.” Forrest Gump will always have a special place with me. I grew up in the small town of Beaufort, SC, and most of the film was filmed in my town. The war and shrimp boat scenes were all filmed close to where I went to elementary school. Forrest Gump isn’t one of the best films in the world, but it is by far one of the most entertaining as one sees how one person’s life can influence so many things in history. Tom Hanks was the perfect choice for this role, and I don’t think anyone else could portray Forrest like he did.
True Lies

True Lies is one of the best films of the year. I honestly forgot that this film came out in this year. One of James Cameron hidden gems, it stars Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis. Arnold plays a U.S. secret agent who tries his best to balance his double life from his loving wife, played by Jamie Lee Curtis. The film is filled with one liners and great action scenes. The scene with Arnold being questioned by Curtis after taking truth serum is hilarious.
The Crow

This was Brandon Lee’s final film, he stars as Eric Draven, a rock musician who is killed along with his fiancé, Shelly, on Devil’s Night. Eric is resurrected by a crow to get revenge against the people who killed him before his soul is carried to the afterlife. The film is awesome and intense to watch with fantastic action scenes and visual effects. Lee gives an outstanding and his best performance.
