A millennium ago, the world was a wreck and at war. Humanity was at war with the Six Dark Lords. The Undead King Leonis Death Magus and his crew ravaged the land and almost had humankind on the brink of extinction when the tide turned. Leonis became the lone survivor of the Dark Lords and, seeing his defeat, decided to seal himself deep underground to be forgotten. His plan was to reincarnate in a millennium from now and rebuild his army once again for world domination.

A thousand years later, the world had changed. No one remembers a war that happened over a thousand years ago, or who Leonis was. The world is introduced to a new threat called Voids. These giant monsters appear and are a threat. Humanity has adapted, replacing sorcery with magical weapons called Holy Swords. The Excalibur Academy is the place where people train and fight back.

During a mission, Riselia Ray Crystalia, a member of the Void execution team, stumbles upon a chamber. Accidentally undoing the seal, Leonis awakens after a thousand years of slumber. Besides his fearsome appearance, he is now a ten-year-old boy. Reborn into an unknown world, Leonis enrolls at Excalibur Academy to learn more about the world that he still plans to bring under his rule.

After watching many anime series, The Demon Sword Master of Excalibur Academy is one of the average-to-below-average ones. The story is fine, but it really won’t be out of this world. I’m not saying that to completely rip this series because there are fun and entertaining moments. The story is a repetitive storyline of late. A demon warlord army is on the brink of defeat, and then they decide to either reincarnate or hibernate for thousands of years, only to end up in a new time where everything has changed. That is what happened in this anime series: Leonis is a demon lord whose army is defeated, and he seals himself for a thousand years. When he revives or awakens, things have changed as he meets an academy that fights against Voids.

What is different about this story is that magic seems nonexistent, or its structure has changed to the point that people’s powers are called Holy Swords. These Holy Swords are different for each person. Also, what is different is that Leonis is revived as his ten-year-old self. He has the mind of an ancient being but the body now of a frail boy. This adds on to the story because you might think that Leonis is weaker in this form, which he is, but his powers are OP. Dude is the most powerful character in the series, and when he fights anyone, he does it in one move. The only time he struggled was at the end when he came face-to-face with a person from the past who had lost their mind.

Most of the story revolves around Leonis trying to figure out how to rule the world again while getting used to life at an Academy. He has two helpers who travel around the city or fortress gathering information for him. During this time, he meets Riselia Ray Crystalia, who revives him, and learns about the challenges she faces at the Academy. Riselia is strong, but she can’t produce a Holy Sword. Leonis helps her become stronger, and, with her crew, he ends up in their dormitory area.

The animation in this anime is unique, as it looks a little different from the standard anime series I have seen. The color scheme and shade the animators used on characters and scenes. The Voids looked like beasts with green spots, as if they had parasites. The characters are drawn in a way typical of anime: different hair and eye colors. I would’ve loved to see Leonis more in his demon lord form. The dude looked fearsome and badass. He had the appearance of Ainz from Overlord.

As for the characters, I will only discuss the two main ones. First, the main character is Leonis Death Magnus, the Undead King and Strongest of the Dark Lords. Dude is fearsome before he goes into his slumber, but when he is reawakened, his body is that of a ten-year-old boy. The story glosses over his previous life with flashbacks, but it would’ve been nice to see his rise to power. This anime really missed a chance to include one or two episodes that showed that. He is an interesting character.

The main female lead, Riselia Ray Crystalia, is a cool girl, but the standard is that I want to become stronger while being limited by something. She is strong-willed as she dies protecting Leonis from a Void. This, in turn, Leonis heals her, which turns her into his strongest undead being, the Vampire Queen. Not a bad deal.

The Demon Sword Master of Excalibur Academy is an okay anime. It is one of those anime series with a storyline that seems repetitive, with little difference in how it is set up. A former badass demon lord returns thousands of years in the future and has to adjust to life. Leonis is an overpowered character that seems to dominate anyone and everything. Give this anime a chance if you are bored or need background sound.
