We all have jobs that we just wanted to quit. Jobs where we wanted to throw up the deuces and peace out. There are many reasons to leave a job: a toxic environment, a shitty boss, wanting to move up the career ladder, or just burned out. When an opportunity comes up, you need to leap at it. The world of having a career/job can be a painful one at times. What would happen if you did your job so well that the company you worked for turned against you? What would you do? Would you apply to the rival company? I’m Quitting Heroing is an anime where the hero decides to work for the Demon Army.

In the medieval age, the Demon Queen Echidna and her crew, the four mightiest generals, decided to invade the human world, as the Demon World was a polluted wasteland. Humanity has the world’s strongest hero, aka Leo Demonheart. Leo wipes the floor of the Demon Army and sends Echidna and her Generals back to their headquarters. Sometimes later, Leo shows up at Echidna’s and her general’s with an application and his resume. He offers to rebuild her army because the human world has become scared of him and his power. Pretty messed up. Echidna rejects his offer because why would she accept? Yet, the Elite Four go behind her back and offer Leo a job by proving he can rebuild the army.

As Leo begins his new journey by rebuilding the Demon army, he learns that Echidna wants to obtain the legendary Philosopher’s Stone with the sole purpose of bringing life and vegetation to the Demon World. As Leo helps the Demon Army, his past might come back to haunt the very thing he wants to do.

I’m Quitting Heroing is one of those anime series that starts one way and then takes an unexpected turn. The anime has many humorous moments, but then it proceeds to become a little dark as you learn about the main character’s backstory and the reasons behind his actions.

In the first episode, we are introduced to Leo Demonheart (what a freakin great last name), and the whole episode is funny. Leo is meeting with Echidna and her four generals. We learn that Leo has a high view of himself. He explains that he was part of the human army, but was so strong that they held him back. He went out and explained how he defeated each of the four generals. Leo pretty much defeats Echidna’s whole demon army. The reason that he is standing in front of the people he just defeated is that he needs a job. Talk about bold. Dude whips your ass and then wants to join you.

The first half of the series revolves around Leo helping each of Echidna’s generals learn a new lesson, while also trying to help rebuild her demon army. Echidna is strongly opposed to this, but Leo meets with the four generals instead. They establish a probationary period to assess Leo’s capabilities and monitor his progress. Once the timing is right, they will present him to Echidna once again. I’d like to take a side note to mention that the time period may trip you up. It is set in a medieval world where magic exists. It looks like a DND place. Sorry, I wanted to mention that. As the Demon Army begins to rebuild, we finally learn what really happened.

Spoiler alert!! Leo is around two or three thousand years old. Didn’t see that one coming. He was made by humans to combat the demon forces. Leo was first created during a period when technology was advanced, but over the centuries, it evolved into a medieval land. The reason he wants the job is that his primary operating system is to protect humanity. The reason no one can defeat him is that he gains power and strength from taking on other attacks. It was fascinating to watch and draw you in. What I liked about the anime is that it effectively portrays Leo’s mental state. He wanders through the lands, helping humanity, and then loses his way. It is an endless cycle. Dude even tries to make warriors that are such a threat to humanity that he can save the day, but more importantly, have a purpose. As the story unfolds, you wonder if he is going to get his wish and die or help the demon world.

The animation in this anime is standard, with no truly exceptional techniques. The first six episodes feature bright colors, as Leo’s personality truly shines through as he teaches everyone new things. That is why you think this is a fun-loving anime about a loser who needs a job and will do anything for it. As stated before, when it progresses, you start seeing darker colors. This is evident when examining Leo’s past. It seemed like the war was dreadful, and even he was drawn in a way for a person developed in darkness with only one mission in mind. The anime effectively conveys Leo’s state of mind as he attempts to reprogram himself. It is like a void, and he doesn’t know where to begin.

As far as characters go, there are really only six that need to be discussed. I liked the main character, Leo. He is portrayed as the world’s strongest hero who defeated the demon armies. He seems fun-loving and highly knowledgeable, but underneath his smile is a man who was an experiment more than 3000 years before the start of the series. He was made by scientists in Tokyo. He has been traveling around the world, trying to keep his one purpose alive. Echidna is the Demon Queen who is different from other Demon royalty you might have seen in other anime series. She wants peace with the humans and even orders them to not be harmed when her army takes over a human village. She came from the Demon World, looking for the Philosopher’s Stone. She is strongly opposed to Leo for destroying her army and has a fiery temper, often indulging in drinking.

For the supporting characters, aka Echidna’s generals, they all added something to the anime. Shutina was a beautiful succubus and a skilled magic wielder. She seemed to be the COO of the army and was overworked. She had no fighting ability and was really embarrassed about the stereotype her race has. She doesn’t know how to manage well, but her strength lies in her genuine care for the people who work under her. Lili was by far my favorite character. Homegirl was an airhead, but had such a carefree and lovable attitude about life. She was the animalistic general who shouldn’t have been a general. Her reports were like those of a kindergarten drawing. She really didn’t think things through and would go headfirst into whatever was on her mind. When homegirl needed to, she would transform into a big ass wolf and do the damn thing. Mernes is the assassin of the generals. He is a human/demon hybrid who hates humans. I thought he was a girl for the entire anime, but nope. Merne’s backstory is intense, as he was sold into child slavery until he was found by Echidna. He does not like being around people, and Leo helps him overcome this fear by working as a waitress. Have to work on those communication skills somehow. Finally, there is Edvard. Edvard was my second favorite character. He was the dragon general and believed in strength over anything else. If you not training, you not working. He is quite the idiot, and when he fails, he tries to do seppuku over the slightest thing. It’s a good thing his daughter doesn’t put up with his stupidity.

I’m Quitting Heroing is one of those anime series that is good for beginners. It is entertaining at the beginning, but like all short series with 12 episodes, the major twist usually comes around the last four episodes. You can really see why Leo is so powerful and why he wants to switch sides. The first eight episodes are entertaining and will make you laugh. When you are bored, give this anime a try.
