Every 4th of July, America celebrates its Independence. A time where there are cookouts, fireworks, more American Flags than the world knows and should be pride in the United States. During this time, we pay honor to our military because they were the ones who risked their lives to give us our independence through the years. Here are some movie quotes that deal with war and training. Some that might not seem great but should make you reflect on sacrifice and the horror it deals with.
“Gentlemen, you can’t fight in here! This is the War Room!” – President Merkin Muffley, Dr. Strangelove (1964)
Ranked as the 64th best quote ever spoken in movie history, it is delivered by President Merkin Miffley when chaos ensues in the war room. Who fights in the war room? Actually, it is probably the best place to fight. The quote is iconic and funny because it is spoken after a short scuffle breaks out between a high ranking general and the Russian ambassador. The line is great because it is so deadpan and the irony of the line.
“The horror…..the horror.” – Colonel Walter Kurtz, Apocalypse Now (1979)
Apocalypse Now is a crazy and intense film set during the Vietnam War. A film where Kilgore is sent to kill Kurtz. When Kilgore assassinates Kurtz, he lays on the ground and utters this quote. Kurtz realizes the extreme evil of war and the darkness in all of humanity. War should never be the answer as it affects all in a negative way that takes decades to get over.
“You better stop eye-ballin me boy.” – Drill Sergeant Emil Foley, An Officer and a Gentleman (1982)
Full Metal Jacket Drill Sergeant is one of the best movie drill sergeants in movie history. No one can top him. Louis Gossett Jr. performance as USMC Gunnery Sergeant Emil Foley ranks as one of the best. In this film, Foley is a no-nonsense person and trains his group hard. Like any great Drill Sergeant, he lets you know not to look at him. He drops this wonderful line that can be said to anyone who is trying to stare you down.
