The first Suicide Squad, starring Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, and a few others, was an absolute mess of a film. You really couldn’t see much, and the star of the film was Robbie. She was worth the ticket price to see this film because she made Harley Quinn hit a new level. Jared Leto as the Joker was promoted heavily, but was only in the movie for about a good ten minutes, and that’s pushing it. The film was one of the low points of the DCEU franchise, and it featured many bad films. To me, the film was trying to be an answer to Marvel’s hilarious Guardians of the Galaxy. Guardians was a film where, when you looked at the trailer, you raised an eyebrow, wondered what Marvel was doing, and then watched it and struck gold. Suicide Squad was more like shit.

When James Gunn announced that he was making a standalone sequel to Suicide Squad, I know people thought, “WTF is he doing or even WHY?” Gunn brought Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, John Cena, Joel Kinnaman, David Dastmalchian, Daniela Melchior, Michael Rooker, Jai Courtney, Peter Capaldi, Alice Braga, Pete Davidson, Sylvester Stallone, and Viola Davis. He tried his hand again at forming a task force of convicts known as the “Suicide Squad” to go on a mission for lighter sentences. I want to be the first to state that, because I’ve watched this film many times, it’s AWESOME!! The story is excellent, but the freakin cast is fantastic and HILARIOUS. Elba, Robbie, Cena, and Melchior are great. Honestly, the banter between Elba and Cena is priceless.
This hilarious film starts with a comedic bang, as the stern-faced Amanda Waller (Davis) assembles two Task Force X teams, known as the “Suicide Squad.” She recruits almost all of them from Belle Reve Penitentiary to carry out missions in exchange for commuted sentences. The mission is for the teams to go to the South American island nation of Corto Maltese, where the new leader is anti-American, along with destroying the Nazi-era laboratory Jötunheim, which houses the secret experiment “Project Starfish.”
The teams are split into two, with one being led by Flag (Kinnaman), Harley Quinn (Robbie), and a few others. In contrast, the other is led by Bloodsport (Elba), the deadliest assassin who is being blackmailed by Waller in exchange for his daughter to not go to prison; Peacemaker (Cena), a ruthless, patriotic killer; King Shark (Stallone), a man-eating shark-human hybrid Ratcatcher 2 (Melchior), a thief who can control rats and talk to them after her father passed the title to her; and last but not least Polka-Dot Man (Dastmalchian), a man who can create deadly polka-dots.
Gunn made sure that he wanted the audience to know he wasn’t messing around, and the team led by Flag is straight-up massacred upon making landfall. Pete Davis’s character freakin died, and I loved it. I can’t stand Davis and was happy he was killed off. Gunn made sure that a few other actors who you thought would be in for the long run were killed off in the first 10 minutes. It will leave your mouth wide open as you feel no one will survive. We learn that Waller is RUTHLESS as she sends Flag group to be a decoy while Bloodsport’s team was the one to serve as the team that sneaks in. Waller orders Bloodsport’s team to recuse Flag and Quinn while bringing down the government and project.

From this point on, hilarity ensues. Gunn made sure to maintain the film’s comedic flavor, tone, and violence throughout. When Bloodsport and his team are ordered to go to the rebel base and rescue Flag, this is the point where Bloodsport and Peacemaker have a hilarious competition with each other by killing a force, only to realize that they made a MAJOR mistake. Another prime example of how hilarious this film is, with extreme violence, is when Harley Quinn decides to escape from captivity after thinking she was in love. While Bloodsport and the crew go to rescue her, she straight up is a one-woman army and whips so much ass before skipping out of the building like nothing happened. The final fight is equally hilarious and great to watch
One of the highlights of this film, which is vastly underrated, must be the dialogue between the characters. I love how this film is R-rated and doesn’t hold back with the dialogue. You get F-bombs and foul language all over the place, but it enhances and brings out the characters’ personalities better. The dialogue between Peacemaker and Bloodsport is on point throughout the whole film. Quinn adds on that caring but psychotic personality that you want to hug her, but also stay away because you know she’s trouble. Bloodsport and Sebastian are hilarious together, with Bloodsport being afraid of rats and refusing to have anything to do with them.
The cast of this film was perfect. Idris Elba as Robert DuBois/Bloodsport was excellent in this role. He made Smith’s character an afterthought with this performance. As the group leader, he is an asshole but has a caring side when he isn’t shooting anyone. Nothing more can be said about Margot Robbie as Dr. Harleen Quinzel/Harley Quinn. She is perfect in this role, and she should NEVER be replaced as this character. Just like Hugh Jackman is Wolverine, Robbie needs to be Quinn until she can’t do it anymore. John Cena, as Christopher Smith/Peacemaker, was another actor who stole the show. He was hilarious as the ruthless, patriotic, loving killing machine. Cena made this character the opposite of Captain America by using foul language and killing people.

Daniela Melchior as Cleo Cazo/Ratcatcher 2 was great as she was the heart of the film with her kindness. She was different from the other maniacs in this film and team, as she was loved by her father and didn’t have parent issues like the other characters. I give it up to Melchior for looking dirty and smelly. I also want to give a BIG UP to David Dastmalchian as Abner Krill/Polka-Dot Man. Being considered one of the dumbest DC characters of all time, Dastmalchian made this role his own and was hilarious. His deadpan look was hilarious, and when he brought out Krill’s poke-dot powers, it was hilarious to watch. Finally, Sylvester Stallone is the voice of Nanaue/King Shark. I don’t have words to say about this character because it was so crazy to see, and I give it up to Stallone; he made this a great counterpart to Marvel’s Groot.
The Suicide Squad is one of, if not the best, film in the entire DCEU. The story was hilarious and entertaining, the cast was phenomenal, and the action was top-notch. If you could only watch one film from the DCEU, this is the film you should watch. It is not like the other films, and you will have a great time watching it. Yes, it didn’t do well at the box office, but I highly recommend watching this film and some of the spin-offs. I’m looking at you, Peacemaker.
