Who out there has that crazy uncle? You know the uncle I’m talking about. The one who talks crazily will make you laugh and always has some type of story to tell. The uncle who is there for you and can give you some wisdom. How many of you have the cool uncle? The uncle who seems to have everything and more. We all have the crazy and cool uncle. Uncles make the world fun and exciting. You haven’t seen anything yet from an uncle who returned from another world and is now a powerful being. Uncle from Another World is an anime where the uncle wakes up after 17 years and is completely exciting and insane.
Overview
Yousuke “Ojisan” Shibazaki has been in a coma for the past 17 years. He almost had a fatal encounter with a truck, but managed to live, but time slowly ticked away. When Ojisan awakens, his nephew, Takafumi Takaoka, comes to take care of him. Ojisan at first rambles in a foreign tongue, but once he gets his language back, he tells his nephew that he was transported to a magical world called Gran Bahamal. Takafumi thinks Ojisan’s mind has been warped after being asleep for so long, but shit gets strange when Ojisan makes a cup move with an incantation. What does the pair decide to do? Create a YouTube channel to showcase Ojisan’s diverse abilities.
As Takafumi learns what happened to Ojisan in the other world, he must also help his “amazing” and “wonderful” uncle catch up on how the world has changed since Ojisan was comatose. Things like how internet speeds have changed drastically, the advancement of technology, and the one thing Ojisan cares about most in the world… his Sony Sega and the console wars. As Takafumi learns more about his uncle and they grow his YouTube channel, the pair will soon build a strong bond.

Holy shit, was this anime hilarious! I couldn’t stop laughing or saying WTF. It is one of those anime series that is dumb in a good way and crazy in another. It was one of the most entertaining anime series I have seen in a long time. I must admit I was highly entertained and couldn’t wait to watch the next episode to see the craziness and the adventures Uncle told about.
The story of this anime is funny, with Yousuke “Ojisan” Shibazaki having been in a coma for 17 years before waking up. His life has been turned upside down as his body was in Japan, but his mind and soul seemed to have been transported to another world. When he wakes up, he speaks a different language and can use magic. His nephew is skeptical until he shows him what happened, and also pulls things out of thin air. This is when the story gets crazy.
What is great about this anime is how naïve Ojisan is when telling his story and how Takafumi can’t believe what he just saw. From the jump, Ojisan makes his first wish to learn all the languages, which is great, but then he says something and gets his ass handed to him. Story after story shows Ojisan getting stronger, but his storytelling is, in a way, so nonchalant that you think he is stupid. Dude has two or three girls after him, throwing themselves at him, and he just ignores them. Another part is when he decides to battle powerful creatures and really doesn’t think about or consider the consequences of his actions.
Some highlights of this anime include Ojisan learning what happened to the world since he woke up. How everything he once loved is either gone or no one cares about it. His love for the Sony Sega was insane, and when Takafumi explains things to him, you could see this man’s soul break. He loses it and then tries to spend money to find his lost past. Everything he thought about the console wars has changed, and he’s not sure what to do. It is all hilarious, and there were a few times when I almost spat out my drink.
The animation of this series is great. It is all appealing to the eye. When I first saw the thumbnail on Netflix, I really didn’t like it. It had an old, boring look. When I hit play, it looked clean and refreshing, well done. I’m still spoiled by animations from Demon Slayer, One Piece, and Bleach, but this one was great, too. It had both old-school and modern animation styles. One scene that really stood out was when Ojisan fought a dragon or some kind of world beast. The fireballs and the powering-up were appealing to the eye, and we were drawn into the anime fully. Nothing like going big with the animation style.
As far as characters go, there are only two that I want to talk about, the stars of the show: Yōsuke Shibazaki, aka Uncle, and Takafumi Takaoka. Uncle is straight up hilarious and a BOSS. Seeing his adventure transported into a different world and him becoming a boss in that world is funny, but also WTF. I feel bad for the dude because everything he once loved has changed and evolved but dude is also so unattractive that he gets confused for an orc. That’s pretty bad for the dude. Yet the dude is completely oblivious to when someone shows him romantic feelings. It’s crazy and funny to watch.
His dutiful nephew, Takafumi Takaoka, is also funny. He is the one who thinks of a YouTube channel for his uncle to make money by showing his magical abilities. He is interested in his uncle’s adventures and the girls he met along the way. Just like his uncle, he is completely oblivious to the girl’s romantic feelings for him.
Uncle from Another World is a funny and great anime series. It surprised me how funny the story was. I wasn’t expecting a story where the uncle comes back with magical powers and realizes his world has completely changed. Uncle and Takafumi are great characters who both tell a great story and whom you want to root for. Next time you are with your uncle, look at them and hope they have some type of magical abilities.
